Two things commonly kept in our gardens could be inadvertently giving pests the green light to occupy them.
That’s the advice from a pest control expert who has simple tips to ward off unwanted rats from darting around our property. Even the most diligent of gardeners might find themselves dealing with an infestation.
Unknowingly, certain behaviors or garden features might be rolling out the red carpet for these pesky intruders. Garden enthusiasts, take heed: your beloved backyard could be unwittingly enticing to rodents.
But fear not, as there are proactive measures you can adopt. Daniel Steward, the top dog at Shield Pest Control, has come forward with some key strategies.
Boasting a legacy as one of London’s premier pest control outfits and the honor of a Royal Warrant from His Majesty the King for services rendered to the Royal Household, Shield Pest Control’s endorsement lends weight to Daniel’s insights, reports Devon Live.
Daniel sheds light on the situation: “During the winter months, you may notice an increase in rodent activity. This surge is typically due to rodents seeking shelter from the cold and searching for food.”

He warns: “Rats, in particular, can pose significant risks to both your home and health. They can cause damage to structures, wiring and insulation, and many carry diseases. Therefore, it’s essential to take preventative measures to avoid a rodent infestation.
“To keep rats out of your home, make sure all potential entry points are thoroughly sealed. Rodents can squeeze through small openings so no gap or crack should be overlooked.
“Additionally, rats thrive in cluttered environments so decluttering your home, particularly areas such as your garage and attic, will help reduce potential hiding spots. In the garden, be mindful of how you manage waste.
“Ensure rubbish is properly disposed of in sealed bins as leftover food, fallen fruit or bird seed can attract rats.

“Since rats also need water to survive, it’s a good idea to install a mesh barrier around ponds or any other water sources to make them inaccessible.
“We would always recommend seeking help from a professional such as Shield Pest Control if your infestation becomes too big to manage by yourself.”
Therefore, homeowners who keep garbage in their yards or maintain water features should stay alert at all times.
Both elements can draw rodents to investigate and settle in your outdoor space.
Should you ever notice these pests or suspect a potential problem, reaching out to an extermination specialist is crucial.
These professionals can provide the most effective guidance on your next steps.
