Gardener Demonstrates How to Properly Prune Tomatoes & We’ve Been Doing It All Wrong originally appeared on Parade Home & Garden.
If you’re growing tomatoes this summer, you won’t want to miss this video on how to prune them correctly. TikToker The Young Nonno recently shared three tips on how and when to prune tomatoes, and commenters were surprised to learn that they had been doing it all wrong.
Nonno explains when to prune tomatoes (it’s not when they’re wet!) and where to trim when you’re thinning out your plants. Nonno calls tip number 3 the most controversial. Listen in to hear what he has to say about removing suckers from your tomato plants.
We were surprised to hear his thoughts on removing suckers! We always thought you removed them the same no matter the variety of tomatoes you’re growing, but Nonno’s tips made sense!

How to Regrow Tomato Suckers
Nonno’s thoughts on using the suckers to grow more plants were also interesting and explain why putting them in water has never worked for us. Viewers had a lot to say about the topic though, as most comments had to do with using suckers to grow new tomato plants.
Viewer @urbangardeningzone5a offered a different tip, “I grow plenty of plants from suckers but I don’t do them in water. I plant right in the soil. I’m in Zone 5A.” @jorgege001 agreed, “The suckers I removed earlier in the season are starting to grow tomatoes.”
@RIOVISTA12345 shared, “Only thing I would say yes to is do start the suckers in water, and replant. Buy a large plant early, let the suckers grow, break off the suckers, and then put them in water. You’ll wait about two weeks, and then you’ll see roots coming out. Then, replant. I did it this year.” This may work, depending on what zones you live in.
There is a wide range of information available for and against replanting tomato suckers. Give it a try to see if it works in your garden!
