Are you interested in becoming a Certified Penn State Extension Master Gardener?
The Master Gardeners of Wyoming County are accepting applications for the Fall 2025 Master Gardener Basic Training course. Master Gardeners are volunteer garden educators who support the outreach mission of Penn State Extension by utilizing unbiased research-based information to educate local communities on the best practices in sustainable horticulture and environmental stewardship. No prior gardening experience is required as all volunteers complete a 60-hour training course in horticultural science topics.
The course is designed to provide home gardeners with the information and skills necessary to share their experience and knowledge with others. Course topics include Basic Botany, Plant Diseases, Soil Health and Composting, Plant Propagation, Weeds, Invasive Species, Pruning, Vegetable Gardens, Indoor Plants, Native Plants, Tree Fruits, Landscape Design, and more.
Weekly classes will be held virtually on Thursday evenings via Zoom webinar, 6 p.m.-8 p.m., beginning in early October and continuing through mid-March 2026. Access to a computer, smart phone, or tablet is required to complete the course. The weekly webinars are also recorded and can be viewed at any time. The course includes the 800-page Master Gardener Manual with weekly companion reading assignments.
Volunteerism is a requirement of the Master Gardener program. Master Gardeners in Wyoming County maintain a Pollinator Monitoring Plot at the Wyoming County Conservation District, staff an educational display during the annual Wyoming County Fair, host an annual Community Seed Exchange, help with conservation projects in the community, maintain a Seed Library, teach Seed to Supper beginner vegetable gardening classes, present lectures, and organize the Think Spring! Gardening Seminar.
