This is a garden rip off. $10 for a squash, zucchini, or cucumber plant is wrong. Bonnie wants you to think you’re getting 6 or 9 plants. You’re not! This is not how you grow them.

The plant roots are all intermingled. Dividing them will wreck the roots. The plants are going to suffer shock and they’ll probably die off when divided and planted. Just save money and direct sow a seed.

  1. This is excellent advice. I stopped buying my starter transplants from the Big Box stores a few years ago. I buy only from a local transplant grower for those plants I don’t direct seed. This year, following your advice, I did direct seed end of May and early June. Watered well, they all look good. Thank you, again, Gary. ✌️

  2. Bonnie Plants are also grown in Miracle Grow. They need constant watering, almost every other day and they don't transplant as well.

  3. I use bonnie plants and they are good. You just have to thin them out with that much. Sometimes you can grow them out if it's like 2-3 cucumbers or 2 peppers together for example. I don't mind paying the extra for the convenience/setup for not having to start them myself.
