Hello. So I think my tree is in trouble. Hopefully the pics go through but after a massive rainstorm (after some pretty heavy drought) my tree is creating new branches at eye level, but nothing at the top. Top branches/leaves are about half dead.

I assume my tree is in trouble. Any tips on getting it back to a healthier state?

Also…. Is anyone able to identify the species of tree? I took a photo of the bark and leaves. Located near the Austin, Tx area.

It’s a mature tree so I’d like to save it if I can.

I posted in the arborist subreddit with not so good news so I wanted to also get a more local opinion. Given the age of our tree and it being a front yard tree, it’ll deprecate our home value to replace it.

Thanks!

My ash is about the same condition, everyone I’ve asked just says yea, they have a shelf life of about 40yrs – and they are generally trash trees that spontaneously fall apart.

You can definitely drag more years out of this tree, but its going to require a decent amount of investment.

Mature Ash trees are high maintenance, which is why people let them fall apart and end up having to remove them.

I would recommend letting the tree run its course, but get a new tree established nearby now.
