Just made a super simple lawn guide for homeowners — curious what this community thinks.
I recently transitioned out of the golf course industry after 10+ years and now lead the grounds and landscaping team at a rural hospital in Washington.
Our PR person asked to feature some of the environmental stewardship work I’ve been doing, which got me thinking: what if I started a monthly column or flier for the community?
This is version one — “The 7 Deadly Yard Mistakes” — a very basic, beginner-friendly checklist I wrote for folks who don’t have any background in turf.
Would love honest feedback if anyone has a minute.

Nailed it even for a warm seasoner! A few exceptions for warm season are a lower mow height for Bermuda grass (2-2.5” max), st aug does well at 3” and zoysia can do well between 1.5-3”, but just stay consistent with your choice). Warm seasoners don’t seed, we just let it fill in, but everything else is the same and you nailed it!
For the watering, 3x would be overkill, 2x is ideal. But maybe mention grass needs 1-2” week depending on heat and drought tolerance variety and account for natural rainfall here, as watering 2-3x a week while getting 1-2” of natural rainfall in that week would be overwatering.
I like this, I would specify to aerate during the growing season for your turf. You don’t necessarily want to aerate Bermuda or Zoysia in the fall when it’s getting ready to go dormant and expose the roots to a potential freeze and you don’t want to aerate fescue in the summer when it’s already stressed due to the heat and increase the risk of thinning. I’m in the transition zone though where things are slightly less predictable. You may be able to get away with aeration during off season months in other areas.
Also, adjusting pH is rarely ever a one time process. It usually takes several years of consistent amendments to actually impact pH in any meaningful way.
Was gonna say throw this out the window for Bermuda lol
Where does one find a good/reliable calander to follow for lawns
I would also something about sharpening mower blades. So many posts on here show grass blades that are being ripped and not cut leading to browning of the lawn
You mention grass type but then neglect to mention it regarding thatch and mowing height.
What about the pests? Fucking grubs are my number one enemy
Give your GPT a few more prompts. You’ll get there.
Dr. Shaddox would have a field day with this one
How long is a deep watering?
