A budding young designer from Inverness has been crowned the winner of a creative competition which invited youngsters from across Scotland and the north of England to design a new community garden for the Edinburgh head office of retailer Scotmid.

Shona Smith (10), who attends Lochardil Primary, impressed the judging panel with her beautifully detailed pencil sketch, inspired by the theme of co-operation.

Her winning design, chosen from more than 450 entries, will now be brought to life as a permanent installation at Scotmid’s centre in Newbridge.

Lynne Peacock, membership and communities manager at Scotmid, said: “Shona’s design really stood out for its thoughtfulness, creativity, and how well it captured the spirit of co-operation. It’s clear she put a lot of thought and love into her idea, and we can’t wait to see it grow into a real garden that everyone can enjoy.”

As well as having her garden creation brought to life, Shona will receive a framed copy of her winning entry, £200 of fundraising vouchers for her school, and a Scotmid goody bag.

Shona said: “I wanted my garden to help bees and be a nice place for people to enjoy. I’m so happy that I won and that my idea is going to become a real garden.”

Construction of the new garden will start this summer.
