Ground ivy or creeping charlie. A 3 way herbicide should control it.
FranciscoDAnconia85
That is by far one of the worst Creeping Charlie infestations I’ve ever seen. If you want it gone OP, you better be ready for a long war.
Manually dig up as much of it as possible and make sure it ends up in the garbage or the fire pit. Then you will need multiple rounds of weed killer containing triclopyr and dicamba. Some people use borax, but I didn’t personally have success with it. Some will grow back, after which you will need to manually dig it up again and apply more weed killer.
Winter cold is your nuclear weapon. Hit the Creeping Charlie with one last round of weed killer right before the first hard freeze.

Hello Charlie.

Holy moly that’s a lot of creeping charlie. You may have to nuke it and start over. You can use herbicide bit you may want to consider covering it with black plastic tarp for 6-8 weeks to kill it and any other seeds around.

Creeping Charlie. I thought my small patch that appeared this year was worrisome. Good luck with your war

Wait until the evenings start getting colder. Before the first frost, spray with TriClopyr (poison ivy killer) with a tank sprayer for three weekends in a row. Wait until spring to see miraculous results

I would leave it. You’re not growing grass in that shade anyway

Get yourself at least two bottles of Tzone and a good wide tip sprayer. Wait for 80 degree days (or less) spray it over good one, then three weeks later spray it again. Whatever is left over, spray it a final time before winter.

What do you plan on growing in its place? Grass might struggle in the Shade. Is it that bad?

Hate that stuff and it has the worst smell when it’s cut.

Oh lord. “Being” overtaken? It’s long past that. Are you going for straight turf grass here?
Technically you already got a self-repairing ground cover, like clover… some people like that kind of stuff. It’s going to be a lot of effort to turn this back into turf.

It’s almost like having monocoulture lawns are a bad idea.

I let my creeping Charlie grow and just pull it up when it gets too close to an area I don’t want it!

Creeping charlie. Do not dig or pull as others recommended. Ground ivy like wild violets are Rhizomatous. Pulling them can break the rhizomes into smaller pieces, and each piece can potentially grow into a new plant. This will actually cause the plant spread.
There are selective herbicides on the market. Ive had good success with triclopyr or even surge or Q4. Using a surfactant is key due to its waxy cuticle.
However this is not the method i would recommend. That area doesnt have much actual grass in it to start with. 2 or even 3 apps of herbicide 10-14 days apart doesnt seem like the best strategy to me mainly due to the time itll take as well as the fact youll probably still have 20-30% left. Instead if youre looking to have a stand of grass there, i’d recommend waiting till mid august and kill it down to the dirt with Glyphosate and start over in early September when everything has died off.

Why is it the stuff we don’t want to grow, grows and spreads best and fast, and the stuff we want to grow, needs the most babying?

Triclopyr Ester.. apply and watch it die.

Taken over? That is your lawn….

I wish my yard would do this. I’m purposefully spreading the wild strawberries to get this kind of coverage.

As some others have said…t-zone will eradicate this

I know you don’t care for it, and that’s completely fine. I think it looks stunning! Makes your yard look very green and vibrant.

I had a creeping Charlie issue myself and a product called Tzone worked well. It doesn’t kill the grass only broad leaf plants.
