So the video quality isn't great here, but you can see our backyard "natural fireworks" if you watch patiently. We have been letting our back yard more or less go meadow for about 3 years, only mowing enough to keep the grass back a bit from the vegetable garden, letting everything grow as it will (except the walnut trees that local squirrels keep planting), and absolutely not using any chemicals at all anywhere. And now, after dark, it looks almost like we have huge numbers of tiny strobe lights strung throughout the yard. It's absolutely incredible, and a huge difference from when we first moved it. It's to the point that the fireflies have even spread to out neighbors' yard (fortunately they love it too!).

Location-wise, we’re in central New York (in the Finger Lakes); I believe our zone is 5b after the last zone adjustment.
For what it’s worth, they’ll congregate on a barren monoculture lawn, too. They’re just not picky.
