welcome to Garden Wise Adventure my name is Malle and today I would love to do an update video on my small growing space now I live in Utah zone 67 i live on a quarter acre property and I have a really small deck attached to my house this deck is about 8 ft wide by 10 ft long and I wanted to see how much I could grow to eat on my deck and I’ll link a video above on the first video that I did about this and now this is just going to be a little bit of an update now I think I f did my first video about four weeks ago so this is four weeks of growth and what I planted now I’m mainly in the pots concentrating on tomatoes and peppers we have a mix of dwarf tomatoes micro dorf tomatoes and then an unknown variety that is a full-size tomato that we’re growing on a single stem this is one of my micro dwarf tomatoes it’s an ink spot and this is a dwarf tomato we also have a sorry little citrus tree that’s looking a lot better than it did in the first video we’re starting to actually get healthy new growth off of it and I’m starting to finally have hope that it’s going to come back and be okay we have my green stocks and then we have my blueberry bushes i just did a food forest update and we harvested some of these blueberries and then I’ll link a video above on when we planted them we just planted these blueberries about four weeks ago they already had fruit on them but look what we’ve got down here oh I knocked it off we have a ripe blueberry fortunately we removed the other ones let’s taste it and see what it tastes like now I think this is a jelly bean blueberry it That’s the name of it the other one that I harvested yesterday is a lot smaller and I’ll put the name on the screen of the other one but let’s taste it it is so good i used to grow blueberries in Southern California and they were almost as difficult to grow there but not quite we could actually grow them in ground with a lot of care the only issue that I had is toddlers both mine and my neighbors we kind of raised our kids together they were best friends and we were best friends and I had three kids she had three kids my when my oldest was let’s see I think my oldest was 10 and her oldest was nine when we first planted blueberries and our youngest were like one by the time the youngest ones turned two and could get around and get into things they learned that the only way for them to get any blueberries is to harvest them when they were green so they and they found them palatable while they were green so they would just harvest all the blueberries before they got ripe and that’s the and so I never got any but my toddlers are gone now i do have a new grandbaby but I have two years before he’s old enough to start harvesting my blueberries and yes I will let him harvest my blueberries but I just had my first one this year and really makes me excited let’s show you what else we have now here in Utah our springs are cool at first and then they go straight to really really hot and we’ve hit almost 100° already and when you get above 90° you start seeing uh flowers drop off the plants so this it’s called aborting the flowers so they’ve been aborting their flowers but we’ve just had a cool off today and I think for the next few days it’ll be cool so I think all of these little buds should start setting fruit now this is one that I started inside over the winter and I’ve already harvested a couple of tomatoes off of it and they were delicious this one is an Adelaide Festival dwarf tomato and this is about as big as it’s going to get down here we have a dohill pep a dohill pepper and we’re just starting to see the first fruit set on it this one had the same problem of fruit being aborted now this right here is due to a huge windstorm we had last night it ca it brought a cold front in it dropped from oh I’d say the temperatures were in close to the hundreds and today we’ve only been in the 70s so when you get that hot you start like I said you start seeing a lot of fruit drop off but we are getting fruit set and when it now that I’m looking at this I know what this is this is a Okay I must be getting old i will put the name on the screen this is Oh this is a black zebra tomato so it’s going to be a semi- dwarf it’s going to be a smaller tomato and it’s going to have black stripes and my daughter gave me this plant and they are absolutely delicious and so I’m so glad that the storm didn’t destroy this plant down here we have an anhi pepper we’ve got quite a few fruits on it and this will fruit all the way through to the end of the year so we’re already getting fruit on that we’ve been harvesting off of this one since oh probably since since February of this year and this is a golden harvest cherry tomato and I absolutely love these they’re really really delicious they’re very prolific and they they fruit early this one right here is a little ink spot and we have our first ripe one down here somewhere there’s our first ripe tomato off the ink spot this is what they look like they’re really beautiful little tomatoes and they’re really good this ink spot’s getting a lot of flowers so we should get fruit off that now during the windstorm last night I did remember to take this tomato off the table right here and put it on the ground that’s usually enough to protect the the plants that I have from wind um but before I took it off the wind kind of tipped it over a little bit and so we’re going to stake that up i’m going to show you how to do it but we did lose half of this pepper plant because I forgot because I forgot to take it off of the table so that one is You can see the broken spot right there that’s a casualty of the wind this green stock right here also had some casualties you can see the burn from the wind how strong it was let’s see if what else was on here that was lost this little pepper plant was right in the brunt of the wind and so I I think it’ll recover we’ll get new growth off of it but it’s going to look bad for a while this pepper plant was on the opposite side of the wind and it did fine despite all the windburn we do have flowers on our beans and these are going to produce and these are going to be producing beans in a little while the kale looks beautiful down there the beets got beat up by the wind they’re on the same side where the wind hit and this bean really got beat up as this one so the green stockck did not tip over despite the fact that we had 50 mph winds with some higher gusts it just wind whipped the plants pretty bad now this little tomato was on the opposite side of the wind and we This is another little micro dwarf aren’t they cute we have another one that we can harvest now I do not know the name of this tomato this is one that I found at a garden center but it’s one of the little micro dwarf ones that bear early and ripen early it looks like this little one was a another casualty from the wind it broke at the base i’m just going to leave it and see if we can get some regrowth off it which I’m not sure that we will the pepper is producing beautifully this is another little micro dwarf tomato and look at And look at all the tomatoes ripening down there this is why I love micro dorf tomatoes i’ve seen people plant green stocks completely full of micro dorf tomatoes we’ve been harvesting the chamomile but it’s been too cold today for them to bloom so we’re we’re not going to have any more to harvest right now but we have a ton of buds and then we have another little pepper there the last thing I wanted to show you is my roselle now the roselle definitely suffered some wind damage but I always tie the roselle up i stake it and I tie it up so that it doesn’t have as many problems with the wind because it is right here in the corner where it gets the full force of the wind but other than a few wind whip leaves the rest of it looks really good and I’m hoping we have a late enough fall that we get flowers that ripen then we get fruit that ripens so now let’s show you how we’re going to stake this i know you can’t see my face but that’s okay we’re going to take a bamboo steak we’re just going to stick it all the way down to the bottom of the pot we’re going to take some stretchy green garden tape i’m going to tie one to the bottom now I’m not going to tie it around the tomato plant because I don’t want the tomato plant to be girdled so we’re going to tighten that as much as possible so it’s straight i like to tie them tight around the steak and loose around the plant so there’s one and then we’re going to do the top also i prefer to put it around more than one branch because if it’s you know if wind happens that I’m not here to save it from I don’t want it just all the weight hanging on one branch so there we go it’s still a little bit crooked but now it’s stable the wind is not going to immediately snap it off at the base if we had a very windy area that I that I couldn’t save it from you know if it was in a pot where I couldn’t take it off the table then what I would do is I would probably put a tomato cage around it you know some sort of cage so that it was stay so that it stayed upright and was safe but my area is not going to require that so this should be enough so now there are so many things you can grow in small areas in pots and in green stocks i absolutely love growing vegetables in pots the things that the things that you need to remember is to water them regularly don’t let them dry out completely and to fertilize them regularly i fertilize mine with fish emulsion once a week and when I plant them I add a slowrelease fertilizer like osmmaote i also add a little bit of organic fertilizer to the potting mix um I’ll link a video up above that shows how I make the potting mix and I try to make sure it’s a well- draining potting mix we make sure we put them in containers with holes in them so they have good drainage and you just don’t let them dry out i water mine every other day right now but I as the plants get bigger and they fill out the pots more I will probably need to go to watering them every single day because letting them dry out stresses them too much but other than that it’s they’re easy to take care of when you have them in pots you can keep them away from pests i don’t have a lot of insect problems if any on these plants i always like to plant flowers nearby to bring in the predatory insects and and it all just works beautifully so I would love to hear if you grow things in pots and hear if you have any suggestions on how to grow in pots better so hopefully this video has been helpful for you if it has been helpful I hope you like subscribe share it with your friends and go have a wonderful garden adventure [Music] you’re
