I’m assuming it’s some type of pathogen, but I don’t know for sure. I’m just curious.

  1. Galls on oak formed in response to gall wasps. Could be considered parasitic or commensalism. Although a one-sided relationship where the wasp benefit… They don’t really do much harm to the oak tree

    Your oak has a bunch of epicormic sprouts. The gals others identified are pretty harmless.

    Common reasons for abundant epicormic sprouts are clearing around the tree, which increases how much light hits the trunk; root damage which stresses to upper branches; and top damage, which reduces the dominance of upper branches and buds.
