For those who enjoy gardening but are unsure of what plants would thrive in their bathroom, an expert has given some help. Finding the perfect houseplant for your living room or garden can be a breeze, but when it comes to the bathroom, things can get a bit tricky.
Gardening guru Michael Griffiths, also known as The Mediterranean Gardener, has shared the “best plants for your bathroom.” Griffiths regularly shares his expert advice and tutorials on social media, where he boasts over 300,000 followers across TikTok and Instagram. In a recent TikTok video, Griffiths revealed: “These are the best plants for your bathroom. Bathrooms can be tricky with different lights and humidity levels but for all types of bathrooms I’ve got you covered.”
He then went on to discuss his list.
Snake plant
For bathrooms with low light and low humidity, Griffiths suggests going for a snake plant or ZZ plant. According to The Spruce, snake plants are “one of the most popular house plants”.
They’re very drought-tolerant and can “go weeks without water in low and medium lighting conditions.”
As they tolerate low light, snake plants are often found in office buildings, says the home improvement organization.
The Spruce notes that snake plants, available in a plethora of varieties with stiff, sword-like leaves in shades of green, yellow, and cream, are “hard to kill.”
This makes them the perfect choice for novice plant parents or those who can’t commit to weekly watering.
Peace lily
Griffiths suggests: “If you’ve got low light and high humidity then a peace lily or a pothos could be a great choice.”
The peace lily, a fan favorite among houseplants, boasts glossy green leaves and white flowers known as spathes, according to Gardeners World.
Gardeners World shares on its website: “Native to Central America, it thrives in a warm, humid environment and is perfect for growing in a bright bathroom. Peace lilies are easy to grow and relatively trouble-free.”

For bathrooms with high light and low humidity, Griffiths recommends an aloe vera or jade plant as the “perfect” choice. Aloe vera plants are slow-growing, stemless succulents with thick, fleshy green leaves.
They’re renowned for their medicinal properties, particularly the soothing gel used to treat sunburn, minor cuts, and other skin irritations.
Aloe vera plants need bright, indirect sunlight to thrive, making a sunny window sill or shelf the ideal spot.
Crassula ovata, better known as the jade plant, is a succulent that blooms with small pink or white flowers.
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) suggests growing it in a conservatory or as an indoor plant in pots of cactus compost under full light.
Boston fern, spider plant, or rubber plant
Lastly, he shared that a Boston fern, spider plant, or rubber plant will flourish in a bathroom with high light and high humidity.
The Boston fern, also referred to as the sword fern, is a classic houseplant found in many tropical regions worldwide.
Spider plants are characterized by their thin, narrow variegated leaves that arch outwards from the center, creating a fountain-like display of foliage.
The rubber plant is a sturdy, fast-growing houseplant with large, oval-shaped glossy dark green leaves.
