BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. (WBNG) — The Broome County Correctional Facility gathered its first harvest of the year from its community garden program.

Trustee gardeners harvested carrots, squash, kale and other vegetables to donate to the CHOW food pantry in Binghamton.

According to the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, the goal is to alternate harvests between donations to CHOW and deliveries to the facility’s kitchen so that gardeners can enjoy some of the produce they helped grow.

The gardeners were assisted by master gardeners from Cornell Cooperative Extension Broome County with weekly horticultural education.

The correctional facility garden is made possible through community partnerships with Bowman Lumber, the local carpenters’ union, Lowe’s, Home Depot, Cornell Cooperative Extension and the Union-Endicott Central School District’s Tiger Ventures Program.
