WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – One person was taken to the hospital Tuesday afternoon after a crash involving a train and a passenger vehicle.

Around 4:30 p.m., the Garden City Police Department, Garden City Fire Department and Finney County EMS were called to 100 N. 4th Street, where they found a Ford Escape impaled by a train coupler. The SUV was sitting on the tracks along N. 2nd Street.

The investigation revealed that the Escape was traveling north on 100 S. 4th Street. As the vehicle approached the railroad crossing, warning lights were flashing, and the crossing arms were lowered. The driver, an 88-year-old man, drove around the lowered arm and was struck on the driver’s side by an eastbound train traveling in reverse. The train pushed the Escape nearly 700 feet before coming to a stop. The train was moving around 20 mph when it hit the vehicle.

The driver was pulled from the vehicle by firefighters and taken by EMS to St. Catherine Hospital in stable condition. He was the only person in the vehicle.

Three crew members were aboard the train at the time of the crash, but none were hurt.
