I’m an idiot and kinda mad at myself. I guess I didn’t completely rinse out the roundup before I used the sprayer with ortho. I’m in 6b right as summer is heating up. I’ve got a couple other spots like this and a handfull of smaller spots. Should I rake out the dead grass and hope for the best until fall?

You could mow it low, scrape it up, and overseed this fall. And then buy a separate sprayer for your fertilizer and herbicide.

Once a sprayer has been used with round-up…it should never be used for anything else again. Lesson learned

Dude I recently uaed my hose to rinse out my carpet cleaner tank with some vinegar and didnt even about it and did it right on my front yard. Big brown dead spot now.

Also a solution moving forward: don’t use round up for anything

Sucks man, I only use the spray containers for glyphosate cause I don’t use a ton of it, I would never trust a sprayer again after it had that shit in it though

That’s why I have dedicated sprayers for each labeled with a sharpie. Reseed in the fall, you’ll be ok.

  7. Reason I don’t mix sprayers. I write what each sprayer is for on them with a Sharpie.

This is why I only do roundup from a prefilled container that comes with its own sprayer.

  9. What exactly did you spray and at what rate? Are you saying that you used an Ortho hose-end sprayer?

They make tank cleaner. But a dedicated tank is the way to go.

There is no amount of rinsing that will prevent this. Dedicated sprayer for non selective herbicide, always.

I’d recommend getting a separate sprayer strictly for the roundup/glypho. I have a 1 gal pump sprayer for the glypho and reserve my 4 gal electric sprayer for the other things that won’t kill the lawn.

  13. If your sprayer was empty, then lack of rinsing wouldn’t have caused this – it’s just not possible. Roundup has no magical powers! It only works when applied at a specific concentration. Anyone who has worked with it will tell you that. I get that maybe there was still some leftover in the hose, which could have led to a spot… But what you’re showing here points to a different cause.

I understand that virtually EVERYONE here disagrees with me. 🙂 I’m writing this to help you avoid the same mistake in the future, because this isn’t about rinsing roundup.

Best of luck with the reseeding!

This exact horror story played out in my head and I have 3 separate sprayers now permanently labeled with the chemical name.

Oh no!! Thanks for the cautionary tale – I was thinking of buying a new sprayer after using my 2 gallon for roundup. You sold me. Sorry this happened but it’ll come back with a little TLC / seed
