A walk around my garden showed all of the lightning bugs just chilling on native plants. I only found one on a non-native Salvia. 1. Asclepias tuberosa 2. Asclepias syriaca 3. Asclepias syriaca 4. Echinacea purpurea 5. Salvia nemorosa 6. Hypericum punctatum

And more importantly, leave leaf litter and reduce light pollution.

The plant stuff is minor to them, they just like to perch on things.

After four years of converting our urban postage stamp of turf grass to natives, we saw our first fireflies this past Friday! It felt more significant than the first monarch and it has me excited for more!

in the seventh year of native plant and wilderness, still no fireflies here. but probably because my stupid neighbor uses glyphosat in his backyard 🙁

Well maybe I’m off target and I actually just have a ton of fireflies because I have a creek?

I plant native and have lighting bugs but tbh where they appear seems so random to me. Theyll flicker in neighbors dead turf lawn or Norwegian maple tree tops. Id like to think im helping though

  6. Where are you located? These fireflies are horkers compared to the ones I have lol. Mine are just little guys here in central Illinois.

I left my leaves much to the chagrin of my neighbors and the city cleanup crews and my yard has so many. 🙂

They were hanging around my coneflowers last evening.

I found one today inside hanging out on a LEGO bonsai. So close, buddy.

I honestly think all it takes is not mowing too short or using ‘lawn chemicals’. I just bought a house last year so haven’t had enough time to create my native plant haven but we still get so many more fireflies than both of our neighbors who are just on the other side of a short chain link fence.. It’s bizarre to witness, but of course it makes me gloat a little 😎

  10. Anecdotally, I feel like the fireflies have been booming this year. The past few years has been depressingly low amounts of fireflies but this year we’ve had a bunch. Also, related to op’s post I had some hanging under some of my common milkweed leaves

  11. AI says lightning bugs don’t eat much but are best know for their mass sexual events. But I have a lot of Rocky Mountain bee plant and I have a ton of dark lightning bugs eating the leaves everyday. And also procreating on the squash leaves.
