I shared this back in around November of last year that I stole 60 bags of leaves from neighbors and used them as mulch in my backyard. There were two hillsides and a long L-shsped segment. I did this with the intent of helping the fireflies, and to just see what else happens. I'm only about 3 miles outside downtown of a major city, in a pretty populated area.

Here I sit 8 months later, with fireflies flashing everywhere in my yard, along the row of houses around me, and across the street at the school. I haven't seen this many fireflies since I was a child. I go outside to watch them every night, and this video absolutely doesn't do it justice. One of my nearby neighbors even said that they can't remember ever seeing that many, anywhere.

I will 100% be doing this again in the fall. Use your leaf litter for mulch or keep a pile somewhere on your property. The fireflies will thank you with countless blinks in the future.

I also use tons of leaves as mulch and am seeing so many fireflies. However, I do think it’s a big firefly year. They are everywhere around the where I live in huge numbers. Even all over my neighbors property and they burn all their leaves.

I left leaves the past two falls and also saw an increase in fireflies. Such a lovely summer night show!

  3. How do you keep it all from blowing away? That was my main issue, I collected a ton and nestled it tight in spot but the winds here just took care of that right away

I remember that post! I kept all the leaves in my native garden that fell and I saw a few fireflies when out tonight. I feel like it might be a tad early in my area and hope for more.

  5. Do you live in the twilight saga? Couldn’t you film when it was sunny 😭
