It’s rose season, and these adorable flowers are at their peak. They’re filling our gardens with one of the nation’s favourite blooms.
There is a rose for almost every occasion, and they can be seen in pots, beds, and borders — rambling and climbing up fences and trellises. To get the very best from our roses, we should deadhead them regularly. A quick snip behind the spent flowers will prevent them from turning into seed pods. If seed pods take over, the rose will flower less abundantly.
Roses have deep roots, so they tend to care for themselves even during warm summers. However, in very dry and hot weather, a generous watering will help them thrive.
They prefer free-draining soil to stay happy, and they benefit from a general-purpose or rose-specific feed in mid-summer.
Roses in pots should be fed every few weeks during the summer and watered more regularly than those in the ground. We don’t want to flood potted roses, but we also don’t want them to dry out during the hotter months. A little care now and then will lead to better-performing roses.
