This is the second house we've owned where we removed all the grass (though the back yard of this one never had grass to begin with due to heavy tree cover).

Whoops. Was posting from my phone and cut off the second paragraph.

This is in the pacific northwest, zone 8b. Ground cover in front depends on what part of the yard you are in. There’s mix of creeping thyme, kinnikkinnik, black mondo grass, and a native summer strawberry. The real challenge with this is that the front yard gets lots of sunlight in early spring, then goes to part shade as the Japanese maple and the three fruit trees (pollarded) shaded much of it out. There’s no ground cover in back as that is the dogs’ domain (greyhounds and Irish wolfhounds) and it sees deep shade to part shade. We plant a lot of natives back there that can handle being trampled, though we do have a few softer plants as well. Along the side we use decorative fencing to keep the dogs from stepping on everything. 🙂
