[Music] we are now fully in gardening season and if you want to add color to your front porch maybe your patio we’re talking about container gardening today at Cool Mins with our good friend Anita good morning Anita good morning so this is actually one of my favorite segments to do every single year as you know let’s start with the fundamentals of container gardening um what containers can we use well any container can work you need to have drainage holes in the bottom i always like to choose larger rather than too small they can tolerate the dryness much more um so a goodiz container and planting your plants in there uh that’s good we need to have a good soil mix too a good basic foundation so make sure that you’re purchasing a a well-known uh potting soil you don’t want to just use black soil from the garden you want to use a potting mix that’s light well draining uh so that your plants don’t get water logged and that they can uh use that soil to grow in so what is the general rule when you’re putting together um your container in terms of height and spillage well I guess you got to look at where you’re going to place your pot is it going to sit up against the garage bricks or something then you want taller at the back fillers in the middle and of course the spillers at the front yeah if it’s going to sit in the middle of your patio or deck then you want to be able to see nice all around so then your your big thriller is going to be more in the middle than your fillers and spillers we want it to create big impact so how do I take care of my container garden so I get the most use of out of it for the entire season well watering is very important and I always recommend that people use a bit warmer water rather than too cold fertilizer your good flowering type fertilizers like your Miracle Grow 20 2020 20 uh container foods there’s they’re out there there’s lots of different things and deadheading you got to clean uh take the dead heads away and just maintain your pots there you go okay and coming up after the break Anita is going to talk about uh for different lighting situations what plants that we can use and good color combos too that’s coming up after the break go to Kman’s website for more info we’re talking about my favorite topic here at Coolman’s container gardening and there’s so many choices where do we begin lighting situations that’s what Anita says so let’s say I have a full uh shaded porch that I want to have a container for what do you shady areas are always a little bit more difficult there’s not as many flowers that you can use but people really like the uh different types of kolas a foilage pot not necessarily having flowers but lots of texture and color in the leaves of the plants uh types of beonia like these and the dragon wing beonia or even just the large flowering tuberous beonas and then more of the green vines and things that not necessarily bloom but just add a lot of color to your pot and they spill over the sides and then of course we’ve got the fillers which is the general rule what about a full sun like my driveway reflects the sunshine off of the pavement it’s so hot what can I put there yeah so things like geraniums patunias the canal liillies are really grand for that sunny location uh sunny locations are always harder to navigate you need to water really well when you have that kind of a hot place um there’s namicas ageratoms you know you can just use your little merry golds and patunias um things like that that can really tolerate that hot sun what about a mix of both like full sun in the afternoon a little like for a couple of hours but then mostly shady what about the mix of Yeah those are kind of uh easier to navigate because you can use a little bit of both i think the shade plants don’t tolerate that sun so if you’re going to have something to plant in a place like that choose things that are a little bit more sunny rather than shady okay wonderful anita thank you so much as always for all of your guru garden advice for more information on container gardening or anything else for the season head to Kman’s website on your
