I brought this albo off Mercari for $15 but why is the stem browning? I did scratch off a bit & it seems it's only on the surface. I have it in a huge vase in water with a bit of hydrogen peroxide with an air bubbler under grow lights.

๐Ÿ‘€ never seen this type of set up before

  2. What kind of freaky Deaky set up is this? Are you milking it?

In all seriousness, could the aerial roots being submerged in water like this be causing the stem to rot? Iโ€™m genuinely unsure.

Omg. Get that out of the water asap. Those roots need a wet dry cycle or they will rot. Test tubes off the aerial roots as well. Roots are only good in water if theyโ€™re grown in water. You can take water roots to any medium but almost never from another medium to water.

If you try to squeeze it is the brown part soft? Or hard?

If itโ€™s hard it may just be corking, if itโ€™s kinda soft it may be rot.

Its not getting enough light and taking in so much water, the grow lights are great supplements but it needs sun. And if youre going to put all the aerial roots in water you need to plant it in a medium, its too much water

I’m seeing too much water for my monstera heart content… I’m legitimately scared the roots might be starting to rot, maybe it’s not the issue, but I can’t see over it… It’s also a new plant you just got, look for pests too, they can be very sneaky and can give the same symptoms as root rot

Did you want to keep it in water originally? I had a Thai in water and leca and it slowly died on me and I only used prop drops. I think they make plant nutrients for hydroponics and Iโ€™ve seen a guy put a water pump in there for oxygen. Iโ€™ve been experimenting with semi hydro as well maybe look into it
