MONROE, La. (KNOE) – The Monroe Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting for a literacy garden at the MH Learning Center on June 25.

The garden was created by the Monroe Housing Authority to promote creativity, reading and community engagement for residents in the area.

It includes a seating area, various plants, bookshelves and plenty of books so children and their families can have an interactive experience while reading and maintaining the garden.

Shelva Thomas, chief deputy director for the Monroe Housing Authority, says the garden is an essential addition to the area.

“We are in a food desert on the Southside of Monroe, so this gives them access to fresh fruits and vegetables and having a place of engagement. Plus, it builds those skills in literacy that our children need so very much,” said Thomas.

The books were donated by the Carver-McDonald branch library.
