LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – As we age, gardening may become more challenging—but that doesn’t mean it has to stop. This week’s Allen County Master Gardeners Brown Bag Series focused on practical changes older gardeners can make to stay active and comfortable in the garden.

The session highlighted ways to ease physical strain, such as using ergonomic tools or adding modifications like special handles or pipe insulation to improve grip. Participants were also encouraged to prepare a tote with smaller tools, water, a cell phone, and other necessities to make gardening more efficient and enjoyable.

The importance of pacing and self-care was emphasized throughout the session.

“You know what? Slow gets you there. You don’t have to go out like you’re doing a marathon gardening trick. Slow gets you there. Slow down, sit down, enjoy what you have planted,” said Sandra Kennedy, an Allen County Master Gardener. “This is the same to save all of us, older, aging people. You don’t stop gardening when you get old, you get old when you stop gardening, and that’s the truth. Think about that—be rejoice in your oldness.”

The weekly Brown Bag Series continues to draw dedicated attendees every Tuesday. Next week’s topic, “Annuals: The Old Versus the New,” will explore traditional and modern flower varieties. The talk begins at 12:15 p.m. at the gazebo in the Children’s Garden, located between the Lima Public Library and the Allen County Museum. Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch.
