welcome back to Clean with Kate And I thought you might like to come and do a little bit of gardening with me because I garden the same way that I do the housework So let’s start by finding my outdoor crocs Just bear with me I might have to pause but we’ll see how we go I just need to probably declutter my little gardening basket as well What I got in here Uh that Oh that’s the plant name that I always forget Ericon Golly it’s a difficult one to pronounce I could I should keep that label and label one of them so I can remember But I just need to have a bit of a declutter in here It’s all sorts of plant labels Right That’ll do I’ll just get rid of this I think declutter my basket Then I’m going to set a time I think we’re going to go in the garden for 15 minutes I’ve been doing some housework I’ve been dusting I’ve been reorganizing my summer cups What else have I done I’ve put a few things away I’ve hit my hot spots But now I’m going to reward myself by having 15 minutes in the garden It’s early in the morning and it’s a lovely time to be out in the garden So that that plant labels actually need to get stuck where they need to go I’ve got a couple of jobs in the garden that I’ve been wanting to do for a while Um I want to feed my bottom of my pots And what was the other thing I want to dead head the roses I might do that That’s a nice relaxing sort of task And it means the roses will flower longer I might get both done Let’s see how I go I’ve put a new plant in here but I don’t know I think they’re a bit leany I might have to try and straighten these orchids up That’s a tricky one Well that’s a bit better See if I could just straighten them up I don’t know Maybe put it the other way Talk about sidetrack moments Just trying to make these orchids stand up straight These are orchids that I’ve got back into flour I’m very good at getting or I think I’ve got very green fingers I’m getting very good at getting my orchids back into flour Right I’ve got a pair of outdoor crocs I’m sure fly lady wouldn’t approve I’m in Crocs at the moment I’m usually in trainers but um my feet haven’t woken up fully yet this morning so they prefer the Crocs So let’s take the indoor trainers That’s indoor Let’s go into the outdoor Crocs Right just got to get out Think I’ll leave the dogs in here They’re all asleep Oh it’s quite chilly out here Okay I’m going to pop my gardening gloves on I always wear gloves in the garden I’ve got timer set for 10 minutes I’ve given myself 10 minutes to just get a few dos done It’s quite chilly so I’m not sure how long I’ll last It’s much cooler this morning actually It’s really warm in the house but it’s cool cool out here Should probably spoil There’s water in there that I don’t think I’ll use that one Need to get And that one’s full of sticks Oh my goodness There’s lots of good stars Got to start I think by emptying this which is absolutely full of water from the rain I should have done that when I cut the I’ve cut all my I might finish the irises actually That’s another job I need to do I’m getting my irises back Let’s go and stick this on the compost here Sorry let me adjust so you can see what I’m doing The noise you can hear in the background is um lots of little birds that have come out of their nests and are hanging around in the trees and then they’ll stay here for about a week and they usually just disappear Not sure where they go but they’re hanging around in our trees at the moment Right let’s see if we can get this on this enormous compost he Oh my goodness look at that for a compost heath That is a crazy crazy compost teeth I like this time of year in the garden because everything’s sort of at its best The roses are at their best Um and things haven’t started to grow over yet so there’s not it’s manageable Later in the year uh as things start to go over there’s a lot of cutting back to do it can become quite overwhelming and early in the early in the year it can get quite overwhelming but this time of year is generally nice It’s just a bit of cutting back to this So I want to try and stay on top of it Right I’ve spotted a dead head there Let’s pop that off There’s probably quite a lot of dead heading to do on the raises I some of the doses I will dead head Others I won’t Ooh that pie is taking some damage in the storm I’ve got some cut flowers now to bring in Think I’ll just get these pies off I can freshen up my flowers in the entrance because we had quite a big storm They’ve been damaged Must have got wind damage I think these ones Let’s take that middle one out But they look lovely on a vase Bit more dead heading I think that was pretty much had it Let’s take that one out Right What else is going on in here Any more deadheading to do There’s a bit there Probably need to go and get those panies popped in water don’t I I should forget about them Otherwise they’ll wilt very very quickly This is looking pretty good in here Let’s go along here and have a look It’s mainly the penis Penis have taken quite a bit of damage in the in the storm Did you get the storm Let’s have a look here This rose right by deadheading the roses Some of the most of these roses in this board are repeat flowers So then they will keep flowering all summer long well into autumn I only dead head the roses that will repeat flour Some of the climbing roses have one flesh of flower and I don’t usually bother to dead head them And some of them have the most amazing hips Like we have a rose called Kipskate which is growing on the shed at the moment and that has the most incredible hips in in winter Hope you can see what I’m doing Right I’m just going to stick to the edges I think because I haven’t got wellies on I think I need to put my wellies on if I’m going into the middle of the border in case anything bites my legs cuz we have got snakes in the garden Hopefully not melly but we definitely seen snakes So I don’t fancy going to the middle of the border with bare legs I saw a huge snake actually on one of my walks recently Um I was I was trying to photograph some wild flowers and then I I went into a sort of wild bit at a local National Trust property and then it turned out I was just about to take some photos and then I realized I was just about to walk on an enormous snake So I very quickly came out and decided not to photograph the wild flowers because I wasn’t sure if it was a grass snake or a ladder I didn’t I had bare legs I did not want to get my legs bitten or what do we call it when it is a it is a bite when a snake gets you isn’t it So I’m just deadheading this climbing rose here I’m not sure you can actually see what I’m doing cuz this one I think will repeat flour See if I can give you a better view It’s quite high up If I do this now I’ll probably get some more flour If you’re not sure whether to dead head your roses or not it’s always always a good idea to Google the variety Some roses definitely benefit from dead heading and others you will lose the hips if you dead head them I I’ve learned that the hard way over the years I’ve been growing roses though for sort of go 40 years So I’ve got I’ve got pretty knowledgeable now So I tend to know which ones to dead head and which one’s not to dead head Right Well just from experience but there’s always new things to learn I bought lots of new varieties of roses this year So we’ve been planting a new garden and we actually Oh no managed to Don’t Don’t panic if you actually take a head off like I’ve just done cuz that would be lovely in a little buds In fact I might just go and do that now because if I leave them too long I think those peanies will drop as well Let’s bring the bucket with me I to refresh my flowers That’s one of the joys of gardening and having a rose garden in particular We get flowers for the house I’ve just bought a rose actually which is supposed to be a really good cutting rose So let’s take to get that in a bud vase first I’ll show you what I mean You want to come with me Look at that Isn’t that fabulous It’s a little casualty I managed to cut that one Didn’t mean to cut that one But I I have a little collection If I see them in charity shops I tend to buy them just cuz they’re really useful So I’ve got a little cupboard full of tiny tiny little vasees and jars So it means I’ve always got a bud vase That’s a bud vase So you stick the rose in it Might need a taller one than that It’s quite a long stem About that one That’s it Perfect So I’ve got a little collection in here of tiny little vasees and bottles if I see them Just pick them up when I see them Some of them I found in the garden buried when I’ve been gardening Let’s pop some water in because it doesn’t hold very much water The flower fl probably won’t last very long but you get the joy of it So I have a collection and this was a casualty yesterday when I was gardening this little alium And this was a casualty a couple of weeks ago when I was gardening I wonder if that one might actually set seed I’ve got some more casualties over here in bud fares But you just It’s like having a tiny tiny floral arrangement It’s a really inexpensive way of having flowers in the house is to have a collection of tiny tiny vasees because you don’t need a lot of flowers in a tiny vase A bud vase is just one but just you get that lovely splash of color Right This peie is a casualty from a few days ago Peanuts don’t actually last very long when you bring them into the house unfortunately So let’s get those I probably reuse the same water even though I know you’re not supposed to but I only put that in a couple of days ago because the house is so warm at the moment They’re not lasting very long And it was fresh a couple of days ago And these will only last a couple of days That big one’s about to drop I think I’m cutting them on the slant Is that where they absorb more water Let’s pop them back in the hall It’s still a little on the long side that one isn’t it Let’s see if it can get it in Good Pennies are spectacular cut flower but they don’t last very long if your house is warm Whoops And they do give off quite a bit of pollen I learned that the hard way One of my children my daughter has really bad hay fever And um the the year that I learned that she had really bad hay he was just quite young and I’d cut some peies from the garden as I always do and not from this garden It was in a different house And then she had her she was sitting next to them on the sofa They were on behind a sofa Just bear with me I’m going to reset my time and give myself an extra 10 minutes Um and unfortunately she had a really bad allergic reaction to them Um and we ended up in A&E with her face swelled up her eyes swelled up It was quite spectacularly scary I’ve never seen anybody have such bad hay fever Oh I’ve got a few weeds coming up where they shouldn’t Let’s pull that out Right I really want to get into these borders and dead head but there’s a fair number of bees coming out already So I think I’m going to put that off until I’ve got wellies on You can just see otherwise you’re going to see me get stung Let’s just do what I can do which is wind in the reef That’s another good reason why this is a good time of day to be there to head in either early in the morning or late in the evening There’s not as much bee activity We have a lot of bees in the garden I do need to put the wellies on and get into that rose there which is dead heading Think I’m going to have to do something with this fox glove unfortunately cuz it’s falling across the path So I think this might have to have to come out until it falls over It’s a shame But it’s a casualty of the storm I think fox gloves are quite shallow rooted Let’s just get that in there You have to be careful with fox blood It is quite toxic It was very toxic In fact there a little baby fox glove there Oh any more irises for dead head one there That’s my tummy again I’m going to have to go back to the compost meets here aren’t I The bucket’s nearly full Let’s just get into this one I can reach this one and keep it flowering Oh there’s a quite a lot of dead heading to do over here as well Let’s see if I can adjust the camera so you get a better view I’m just taking these dead heads off This is what I’m taking off And it just means that this flower all I say all these roses in this border are repeat flowers So they should keep going I’ve got another border where they’re not repeat fl they have a oneoff sort of spectacular flesh but a lot of more modern roses do repeat flare golly listen to my tummy I think I’m going to need an early breakfast today Another load of dead heads This one does need dead heading More dead heads than new heads I’ve got a bit of a problem with my second tails They keep coming apart I need to treat myself to a new pair of snips More dead heads So say if you can if it’s a really good it’s really I’ve found it’s a really calming routine as well if you come out first thing in the morning in the garden It’s part of your very early morning routine before you’ve even had your shower and things before the day starts It’s a really nice calming routine that I love at this time of year cuz it’s warm enough to come out And as I say there’s a lot less uh insect activity So you’re less likely to get bitten or stung So I’m not just deadheading the roses There’s other things going on in here that if I dead head them will flower for longer including this gorgeous little thing and these scabas I’m going to dead head this as well It’s quite tricky here without leaning into the other plants In fact I might just let some of these dead heads fall into the border cuz you’re not going to see them They’ll be fine They’ll just compost at the base Right That’s better That’s a dead one cuz in fact what I was finding is that I was putting off coming into the garden until the evening uh after I’d finished working and I was really really tired and I wasn’t always getting out here and oh I realized I wasn’t I wasn’t feeling like I was getting the most from the garden I wasn’t getting to enjoy it So I decided to sort of flip my routine around and come out here first thing in the morning and it has made a huge difference I’m getting a lot more done and I’m getting to enjoy it at the best time of year cuz it’s going to be a long winter It always is isn’t it Until and then you every year summer arrives and it’s like wow isn’t it fantastic And then we forget every year I forget how amazing summer is Particularly June And I think June is one I say this every month didn’t I I think I said this in May May was my favorite month but I absolutely love June because of the roses and so many things are flowering in June But I do need to I do need to weed my path It’s incredibly weedy I do tend to let random things come up in strange places Like I’ve got a flower coming up through that bench there which wasn’t planned And it well I’m sure it wasn’t there last week I’m going to pull this out because I don’t actually want that in there That’s just something that came in from another old border when we were moving soil It will take over if I leave this It’s very very very invasive I think that’s golden rod Right I need to dead head this iris next It’s the Siberian iris It’s finished flowering now for the year This won’t repeat but it just tidies it up and it means that the plant puts its energy into producing growth of the plant rather than trying to make seeds That’s another good reason to dead head Actually I don’t tend to do that with the roses because a lot of the ones that just have one flesh do have good hips Not all of them but some of them do So let’s do the Siberian iris It looks so much tidier if you do Oo golly That seriously my tummy is crazy this morning I think it wants a nice quick breakfast It’s almost like decluttering in the garden This isn’t it Cutting back and pulling out the weeds Yes it’s a kind of decluttering You can’t You do get a lot of plants just maybe plants in the wrong place or plants that take over You can’t keep every plant in the garden Oh my goodness I just spotted Kate This is actually a wild flower in here that’s quite invasive Oh I’m going to need to go back to the compost he poured this out It’s kind of taking over back here It just sort of came in I left it But actually I wonder if that was a mistake cuz it is taking over Might have to dig this out this year It’s seeds everywhere as well So I do want to get it out now before it seeds too much Probably missed out those As you can see it’s an enormous plant Oh I think I’ve managed to pull one up which is good One left And it and it roots underground by runners It’s See how it’s a bit of a thug Can’t remember the name of this thing I think it begins with a It’s a sort of thing that grows a lot in Norfolk I hadn’t actually ever seen it before I came here Can’t remember its name though I think it might be related to Babage right But I definitely shouldn’t have let it come in this border I don’t mind it in the wild bits of the garden but I don’t want it in my rose garden Right Okay Had a go at that Think I have to have a trip to the uh to the compost he now So if you’d like to come with me we’ll go back We’ll go and see the massive rose that’s just come out And then I think I probably have to go and have a drink and maybe make some breakfast soon as my tummyy’s containing Just spotted another job I need to get on and do to dead head the wisteria I just thought I’d show you this This rose is now at its absolute It’s not quite at its best but it’s not far off The storm hasn’t damaged it thank goodness In fact I think the rain’s really benefited it And go around have a look This is Kate This is the one I was telling you that I obviously don’t head cuz it’s incredibly large Um and it has the most beautiful bright orange hips in winter in autumn and winter And there’s an a pillar rose growing through it which is the pink one Oh my timer is going off So I think it’s definitely time for a break So we’re round in this side now I said promised you to a trip into the garden in the sun sunrise haven’t I And here we are with the sun on the roses Oh and there’s another rose in there Golly I’ve got lots of roses growing through that one And the American pillar comes all the way along here But the Kiffkate is the real showstopper today Look at that Isn’t that incredible It’s covered in bees The bees love this rose Anyway on that note I think I’ll go and make a drink Thank you for joining me Hope you’re finding the videos inspiring and hopefully inspiring you to get out and garden 10 or 15 minutes at a time because that way it does feel less overwhelming I need to take this bucket to the compost heap Another way I sometimes garden is one bucket at a time And if I’m feeling really sort of like I haven’t got time to I just do one bucket at a time And that way I I do get a lot done It’s surprising if you do that several times a day Anyway bye for now
