Paweł Grobelny with the prestigious CITY’SCAPE award! The architect was honoured for his project to develop the waterfront of Lake Słupeckie. The ceremony took place in a unique venue – the Salone d’Onore at the Palazzo dell’Arte in Milan, during the prestigious Design Triennale. This is a tremendous accolade for a Polish designer who has specialised for years in creating thoughtful, sustainable public spaces.

CITY’SCAPE – European recognition for the best design of public spaces

The ‘CITY’SCAPE’ award is one of the key European initiatives to promote landscape architecture and the design of public spaces in the spirit of sustainability. The competition is organised by the National Italian Council of Architects, Town Planners, Landscape Architects and Conservators (CNAPPC), the organisation PAYSAGE and the international magazine TOPSCAPE.

The awards are presented as part of the Triennale di Milano event, which for years has brought together the best practices and ideas related to urban landscape and architecture. CITY’SCAPE is not only a prestige, but also a real appreciation of projects that combine aesthetics, function and concern for the environment.

Grobelny’s international experience

Pawel Grobelny is an established designer specialising in the development of public spaces in Europe and Asia. His projects can be found in Brussels, Paris, Strasbourg and Shanghai, among others. He has worked with numerous institutions and cities, designing urban furniture and landscaping systems that combine modernity with natural materials.

All of Grobelny’s realisations are characterised by their characteristic simplicity, minimalism and harmonious integration into the existing environment. The designer himself emphasises that his aim is to emphasise the qualities of nature, not to compete with it.

“I was keen to fit into the context. The design was not to dominate nature, but to draw from it and support it,” – says Grobelny.

Słupeckie Lake gets a new quality

The awarded project concerned the development of the waterfront of Słupeckie Lake. This unique place in the Wielkopolskie Voivodeship was transformed thanks to the designer’s innovative approach. Instead of a classic pier, an irregular, undulating structure was created, which resembles the natural language of the landscape. The pier extends over the water and into the lake, creating places for rest and contemplation.

Paweł Grobelny’s project – a bridge that breaks the mould

Unlike typical straight piers, the one made in Słupca was designed in an organic way – its form resembles waves and harmoniously interacts with the shoreline. The structure was made of wood, which will acquire a patina over time and integrate even better with its surroundings.

The bridge has a recreational function – you can sit here, observe nature or simply take a stroll. With no barriers or designated directions, the user decides for themselves how to use the space. This is an example of designing with people, nature and the future in mind.
