so my bf lives in a basement flat in london, and recently his money tree has started dying? according to him the watering schedule hasn’t changed – he’s had it for months with lower light and it’s been fine, but i put it upstairs because i thought maybe the lack of light was the issue but it seems to be getting worse?

i’m at such a loss the other one he has is doing fine 🙁

the first two pics should be from the 20th and the last one is from today.

thank you for the help!

That looks like a jade. Are you over watering it?

  2. Probably overwatering. It’ll want a soil mix made for succulents (basic 1:1 mix of potting soil and perlite/pumice is what I use for my jades), as they all need extremely fast drainage.

If the watering schedule is a set time, this is a bad idea for most plants but especially succulent species. You’ll want to wait until the soil is dry all the way through AND the plants are showing signs of thirst. For jades, this means thinner, softer leaves with visible wrinkling/dimpling and maybe some curling. These signs should be present throughout the plant, not just in the oldest leaves.

Jades do like full sun with no shade outdoors, and will struggle inside unless right in an unobstructed south-facing window and/or under a good-quality grow-light. Getting it better lighting will also help avoid overwatering, because the soil will be drying faster.

Not a money tree. Jade. Needs new pot with drainage. That hanging pot probably has none! You are drowning it.

You should only water it when it is completely dry you can check this in some ways. For succulents I like to feel the leafs and if they are firm it is not ready for water yet. I also lift the pot and feel the weight, if it needs water it will be very light.

To save it you can stop watering it so much and wait to see if it gets better. If you repotted it recently you might want to move it back to a smaller pot, I once almost killed a succulent in a pot that was too big. They have very shallow roots so they don’t need a deep pot.

The plant should get better, but you can always check after it should have dried out (~2 weeks) to see if the bottom soil also dries out. Succulents prefer to be completely dry before they are watered again.
