CLAYTON, CA (June 23, 2025) — Friends and family gathered at the Clayton Museum on Saturday for the dedication of the Rory Richmond Memorial Succulent Garden. Rory, who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly five years ago, was a vibrant and beloved presence in the Clayton community. A tireless volunteer, he gave his time and energy to the Clayton Garden Club, the Clayton Business and Community Association (CBCA), and the Clayton Historical Society, among others.

Many of the plants, including a large cactus, came from his own garden.

Rory was the driving force behind the CBCA’s Clayton Barbecue Cook-off. His hard work and dedication earned the event professional-level recognition by the Kansas City Barbeque Society.

He was universally remembered as the man who could never say no.

On hand for the garden dedication was Becky Lane, Rory’s life partner, who shared a touching memory of the day they first saw Clayton. “It was a natural fit,” she said, recalling how Rory knew instantly that this was where he wanted to be.

The new garden is a fitting tribute to his enduring spirit and deep love for the town he called home.
