Squirrels or mice are the pests stealing your zests

Meyer lemons in June?
Also… sorry about this… rats. Possums are another option if you don’t see gnawed bark or droppings.

My guess is rats or mice. Our neighbors here in Northern California have these, and they just love them!

This is happening to my dad, he got obsessed and did a stake out…ended up being rats 🐀 😭 He’s in SoCal, Meyer’s lemons as well.
itspronouncedtouche
Most likely rats, but could be possums as well. If they run out of lemon rinds, hungry rats will start eating the bark off the tree which can potentially kill it, so your friend should keep a close eye on it.

It’s rats. I have the same problem. I sprinkle bird seed on the ground around the tree. I feed the rats to keep them out of the lemon tree.

My squirrels just open them and leave the rind it drives me nuts when I go to pick and it’s already empty but it’s hilarious every time

Squirrels. Same thing happened to my Meyer lemons last year. It was frustrating because it kept happening over several months.
