DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Life Changers Church in Decatur dedicated the Mother Honeylee Livingston Community Garden on Sunday morning, inviting community members to scatter seeds across the land to help foster new growth.
The garden is named after Mother Honeylee Livingston, a woman dedicated to her community and the study of horticulture.
Life Changers started this phase of community improvement with a food bank and donating raised high bed gardens to seniors in the neighborhood.
Dana Ray, campus Pastor of Decatur Life Changers Church said the garden was started to not only provide produce for those in need, but to also beautify their neighborhood.
“We took something that was vacant that was seemingly of no value, and we’ve turned it into worth,” she said. “That is what we want to continue to say to individuals in this neighborhood: that we can take things that are overlooked, undervalued, not worthy, and bring it to a place of value. This land is now valuable, and the individuals in this neighborhood are valuable.”
The garden will be sustained and cared for by members of the church and community members.
