What’s the best way to go about training leaves / petioles / new growth to keep it from growing down towards the pot like the leaf in this photo?

  1. Not familiar with this exact plant, so someone correct me if there is something unconventional with exactly this plant.

In general the plan turns the leaf towards the stronges light source and positions the leaf to receive the optimal ammout of light. So keeping this in mind, you need to change the strongest light source to come from the direction you want the leafs to be facing towards. Alternatively if the light is already coming from that direction, you need to reduce the intensity. Plants turn the leafs downwards if the light source is too intense.

I think giving it some sort of support like a moss pole or stake would help it. It would give it a more defined back and have more leaves facing the front.

I don’t have a billie but i do have a spiritus. And like the other comment suggested, they will turn towards the strongest light. I had one leaf turn almost a complete 180°, the whole petiole and all turned just to face the light source.

What’s the lighting situation? My first thought is too much light.

Plants often look like this if the lighting is too intense. The leaves turn down like that to shield themselves. I have it happen with billies often.

Your plant has a very vibrant orange petiole! That also makes me believe it’s getting a lot of light.

Another potential is that if your light source is coming from below, the leaves will grow downward towards the light. But to me it looks like the lighting is a bit too intense.
