TWO kind-hearted young community champions were celebrated at this year’s Gourock Garden Party.

Nina Gardiner and Lily-Rose McShane, both pupils at St Ninian’s Primary School, were recognised at the event for their outstanding contributions to the school and to Gourock.

The presentation was one of the highlights of this year’s garden party which was far from a washout despite the torrential rain.

Congratulating the girls on their awards St Ninian’s head teacher Siobhan Currie said: “Both girls demonstrate our school values of resilience, kindness, respect and inclusion in all that they do.

“They are two incredible girls who embody our school values and I had not difficulty in nominating them for the award.

“Lily-Rose is a beautiful singer, but she gives up her own time and is the first to volunteer to represent the school, singing at events and masses and celebrations.

“She is really quite such a lovely person and very modest. “

Ms Currie added: “I also nominated Nina, she is a wonderful girl who has dyslexia but never lets it hold her back with her learning. She helps all the younger children and helps run a dyslexia resource library.

“She helps keep it stocked and keeps adding to it as well. She is incredible.”

Nina and Lily-Rose each received a plaque, provided by Inverclyde Shed, as well as a certificate, a bunch of flowers and a voucher provided by GoGourock to spend at our local shops.

The organisers, Gourock Community Council, thanked residents for turning out in large numbers despite the weather.

Community councillor Audrey Blincow said: “It was a great day even although the heavens opened right at the opening ceremony – but it didn’t dampen the spirits of our young performers.”
