The US is experiencing a scorching heatwave, with temperatures reaching the high 90s in several regions this weekend and next week.

Amidst this sizzling weather, it’s important to keep yourself, your pets and your property safe. Gardeners are facing the challenge of keeping their lawns lush and green. Experts share that due to the heat impacting grass growth and causing wilting, it’s crucial for garden enthusiasts to know the optimal time and amount for watering their lawns.

Now, gardening gurus have disclosed the prime time for irrigation during these sweltering days. Homes and Gardens magazine recommends that the best time to water lawns is early in the morning when temperatures are cooler and evaporation rates are lower.

The experts suggest: “Watering the garden early in the morning before the day has started to warm up is another way to reduce the need for irrigating.

“By irrigating in the cool of the day, you will be watering most efficiently, as any evaporation, if any, will be minimal and you will be providing moisture for the plants to use when they are transpiring most during the day.”

They continued: “Furthermore, through watering in the early morning rather than early evening, you are potentially discouraging slugs and snails from being drawn towards your plants and fungal diseases from developing on wet foliage overnight.”

While increasing watering frequency is necessary as temperatures soar, the pros warn against excessive irrigation in summer months, as overwatering can backfire on gardeners, ultimately harming their verdant lawns.

Experts from MyBuilder.com have warned that a common misconception could be harming your lawn: “Many people think that tipping excess water, such as paddling pool water, on the grass is helping it thrive. However, you are actually risking overwatering and waterlogging your grass, which could potentially destroy the area.”

They advise better ways to repurpose extra water: “Instead, use the water to water any other plants or to pour into different corners of your garden, distributing the water in various places.”

Furthermore, there are several myths about shielding grass from heat damage. One such myth is that placing a mat or rug beneath paddling pools or garden objects shields the grass.

In fact, these coverings block sunlight and oxygen, leading to potential harm. As a result, experts suggest not putting anything under outdoor items.
