I live in Baltimore City MD and bought this planter to put by my front door steps. Only I have no clue about plants much less outdoor urban plants. Its a street kids go down after school a lot so I worry some plants like aloe or herbs might get a drive by pruning often. What would you tell a beginner to put in this? Thanks!

Yarrow and self heal are fun native flowers that are easy to grow from seed and hard to kill

A ground vine plant for the bottom step maybe some type of melon 🍉, then maybe some type of dill or sweet mint in the middle then strawberries on top

  3. Read some books, hire a landscape designer. If it freezes in the winter for any length of time maybe only annuals.
Sun, shade, dry, wet so many questions.

I would totally embrace the drive by pruning. Some herbs will grow pretty quickly from a handful of seeds like cilantro or dill. Marigolds are always pretty and left alone by most wildlife. I would lean towards things that tolerate a little drought since these will dry out more than in ground plants.

Do keep in mind that many “hardy” plants in your area won’t actually survive the winter in a container. So I would focus on annuals and maybe do something fun with it for the winter holidays too.

  5. What’s the sunlight situation? I’m in DC, so same zone.
