MONROE, La. (KNOE) – Check out the new Butterfly Garden at the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo!
Greenhouse Manager, Jackie Batey, started planting the garden by seed in the greenhouse early in the year and planted in the spring.
Everything is in bloom! They have herbs and flowers that attract pollinators. Plus, a wonderful canopy nearby to catch some shade under.
They also have a beehive, and any extra is sold in the gift shop.
If it gets too hot, butterflies won’t be out in the garden. They enjoy temperatures below 85.
The garden was built thanks to a donation in honor of Joe and Ann LeDoux.
You can build your own butterfly garden with the Louisiana Ag Center’s guide.
Stay up to date with zoo events on their Facebook page!
While construction continues on the new Louisiana Purchase Exhibit, the Reptile Building is closed. Until then, you can request some reptiles at educational programs or birthday parties or you might just see one at the zoo when staff are taking them on a stroll. Call 318-329-2400 for more information.
Due to weather delays, construction crews believe the new exhibit will be open sometime this spring.
You can also volunteer with the zoo. Contact the Louisiana Purchase Zoological Society through their Facebook page.
The zoo is open every day of the week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can get tickets to feed the budgies, feed the tortoises, ride the boat, or ride the train at the front office.
