Funny thing is I never even noticed the state of this plant until I took this picture…

We bought this fiddle fig perhaps a year ago, and last night my wife said something about this plant on it's last legs. Finally "saw" it this morning and realized wow… not again. Is there any chance for this to grow leaves? Should we put it outside?

My wife buys plants based on what the flavor of the day that her friends are raising, but she doesn't have that green thumb or dedication of her friends. All plants seem to eventually die a long and horrible death. Her mother had a beautiful huge jade (3 feet wide). When she passed away, my wife took it in… but after 6 years, it just diminished into nothing. My wife is Flora Death!

You should chop the top, put it near a window with sunlight and make sure it has a good draining soil and pot.

If it is too far gone definitely depends on what got it to this state.

It does still have a leaf that’s green, so there is a chance!  You can put it ouside in a shady area (not full sun, it has to acclimate).  But also what kind of soil is it in?  How often does it get watered?

  4. If the roots and stem are healthy, it could theoretically bounce back. But in my opinion, it’s not worth it. You’ll never have a “good” looking fig, it will just be alive. I used to take in dying or poorly kept house plants to revive them but I’ve found it’s just not worth the hassle.

PLEASE SAY NO BC IT LOOKS LIKE MINE 😭 mine keeps getting down to one leaf and I’ll think it’s toast and it will suddenly get a new one…. Im up to 3 currently bc I moved her outside and I think
    She’s happy out there!!

  6. My fig dropped all of its leaves a few months ago, despite literally nothing changing. So it got the “you live or you die” treatment and put on the porch. It chose life, about 9 new leaves already.

No! Genuinely, chop it way down. Water it in the shower. Give it more light and just leave it alone. It will grow back. Trust the chop.

I had a fiddle fig and it didn’t produce any new leaves for 8 months! What I did was I used a scissors and scratched the nodes where the leaves are supposed to grow and gave it fertilizer once a week. It started a spurt of growth with new leaves every week now. Don’t give up!

Fiddle fig are hard they dont like cold, they dont like to be moved often, they dont like direct light. My recommendation try chopping it and move to a little darker area it may bounce back

My bf brought one one just like this. One long stick with a single sad leafe on it. He got it as a present from colleges when he started the job.
He brought it home and 2 weeks later 2 news leaves where showing up, now it has a small pushle of leaves on top of the stick and does great. So there is hope!

  11. Rarely post, but mine bounced back from exactly this. Dropped all the leaves except for one when I repotted. Then they started coming back and put it into a new pot with better soil mix / nutrients and it’s gotten back pretty good

Looks more like a fiddle twig 🤣

Looks like you’ve received some good advice about the Fiddle Fig. I just want to say I’m sorry about the Jade plant. I have dozens of beautiful and thriving house plants, but every Jade plant I owned would shrivel up and die, until recently. I’ve discovered the importance of watering it from the bottom, and it seems to be doing much better. I’m sure your wife’s abilities will improve over time. Good luck!

I know people will tell you to chop and prop but this leggy guy has a story

  15. Interesting. My mom gave me a cutting from hers with 8 leaves, they all fell off within a month and now mine looks exactly like yours, in front of my patio door. I think it just got stressed and dropped the leaves.

Yes, go buy her a ZZ and don’t over water it.

You definitely still have a chance. I have one of these at work that was down to no leaves – literally just sticks in the dirt as far as anyone could tell. I thought it was dead so I moved it into a dark closet and left it there to deal with later… it started sprouting new leaves a few weeks later. I just left it alone in the closet to do its thing. I started turning on the closet light so that it could get some light (no idea if it actually does anything) and now it’s thriving! I used to have it by a window that got 5ish hours of indirect sunlight, but it stays in the closet now and I’m too afraid to move it.

If you do chop the top, you can stick the top section back into the soil. I did that on one I rescued from an estate sale and it didn’t do much for awhile but eventually took off!

It’s waving you one last goodbye
