LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Telecom company T-Mobile announced the town of Searchlight will receive $50,000 to benefit its community garden.

Searchlight is one of the latest 25 Hometown Grant recipients, T-Mobile announced Tuesday.

The funding will go toward a shade structure for the garden to protect the plants from the desert sun.

“Speaking on behalf of the Searchlight Betterment Organization, we are thrilled and grateful that the Town of Searchlight, Nevada has been selected for this grant,” Kyle Myers, president of the organization, said in a statement. “Finalizing the development of the community garden with a shade structure is pivotal to our mission of investing in our hometown.”

Organizers say the Searchlight Community Garden provides residents with affordable fruits and vegetables, helping mitigate the effects of living in a food desert.

The closest major grocery stores are located in Boulder City or the Laughlin-Bullhead City area, both of which are about 40 miles away.
