I live in Kansas City, MO (zone 6b) and have a front yard with a massive old oak on one side of the walk up and a maple tree on the other, with mulch and a few decorative sedges we didn’t install at the borders near the sidewalk.
Long term we are converting everything we can on property to native in some capacity. For now our issue in the front is that acorns are aplenty and they like to try to turn into more oak trees (love them but one of this size is enough).
We were at the Missouri Botanical Gardens last week (recommend!) and saw some sedges we thought might be perfect for our front yard because they were under oaks, in plenty of shade, and were seeming to out-compete new saplings. St. Louis (where the Gardens are) is 7b, but I don’t think it would matter that much. If the sedge pictured isn’t native, does someone have an idea for a similar one that is that would tolerate lots of shade under trees?
