I would usually cut them into 3rds, dip those ends in rooting hormone & just stick them right in soil that’s *lightly* moist, they’ll eventually grab & grow. Others put them just in water or perlite to root a bit, or you can just plant all of them & let one big rainbow cactus grow 🤠

I love to put them in water and watch the roots shoot out

Make sure you dry them out for a week or two. Then just put in water. Here is one of my cuttings after a few days already growing roots. I’ve propagated them for years you don’t need anything fancy. The only thing that matters is letting the cut dry out.
Make sure the cuts are calloused (dried out for a few days). You can stick them directly into your growing medium, which could be perlite, potting soil or something that drains well. I would not recommend moss. Rooting hormone is helpful but is not entirely necessary. Keep the growing medium fairly damp/dry until roots develop. Once roots develop you can water more regularly. Give them bright light and extra humidity.
