Last summer, Emily shared a great video on gravel grid driveways, and it got a lot of feedback! They’re permeable, low-maintenance, and cost effective – a great alternative to solid paving. Here’s why they’re worth considering for your space.

a few months ago one of our designers Emily did a video about gravel driveways and particularly about these grids it’s over on our besting co channel now we got so many comments about the sustainability of this and about why about the maintenance and all that craziness so I just wanted to expand and give you some reasoning behind why we did this driveway the first and biggest reason was this insanely beautiful tree now this big beach tree weirdly didn’t have any kind of preservation order on it and I think it should it is just the most beautiful thing but I didn’t want cars driving over the root system here and adding weight to it and compaction is the is the key thing to avoid so we have done this kind of free draining gravel grid system now this gets thousands of leaves dumped on it it’s been here for about three or four years blowing those leaves off in the autumn just keeps this looking good um we could have made the gravel much deeper so you don’t actually see the grids but you do kind of with 4×4 cars get some kind of um shapes roots almost being built into the gravel and that doesn’t look great because then there’s a maintenance thing of reshuffleling it so it’s very good permeable uh drainage wise it’s all kind of sloping down this way we would have loads of runoff water if that was uh going all into a drain from a driveway of this size so it’s a brilliant solution to allow all that rain water down and into the soil the buildup of this is specific so it can take the weight of something like an Aardo delivery van but it’s also soft enough to allow the plants to seed in it as and when we could allow some of the things from the borders to jump in here and create some softer planting at the moment we’ve decided that we’re just going to maintain it as it is and as you can see four years on it looks absolutely
