From cracked asphalt to garden magic!
We turned our old paved backyard into a blooming sanctuary—and it’s easily the best project we’ve ever done. We had the asphalt professionally removed (not a DIY for us!), and while the soil left behind was rocky and not great for planting, we got creative.
We built raised beds using cinder blocks, added proper drainage, and covered them with stone for a more finished look. The beds are 6×9 and 10×14—perfect for everything from veggies to dwarf fruit trees. We even added a thrifted arbor between the smaller beds and filled the space with secondhand treasures: a bird bath, birdhouses, and sweet little garden accents.
Soil was delivered, seeds were planted, and now we’ve got a little backyard Eden—all thanks to some vision, a lot of work, and a love for giving old things new life.
