our very own bananas it might sound like a difficult task but I assure you it is not with a bit of care and some simple knowledge you can watch a magnificent banana plant grow it is a wonderful project for any gardener this guide will help you every step of the way making it easy and fun by following this guide you will learn everything you need to know we will start from the very beginning is a journey that is as rewarding as it is interesting the first step is choosing your plant there are many types of banana plants some are very large while others are smaller dwarf varieties if you have a small garden or want to grow your plant indoors a dwarf variety like the dwarf cavendish is a perfect choice these plants stay a manageable size but still produce delicious fruit look for a young healthy plant from a good garden center it should have bright green leaves and no signs of disease or pests a strong start is key to a healthy plant now that you have your banana plant let’s talk about soil banana plants are hungry plants they need soil that is full of nutrients the soil also needs to drain well water that sits around the roots can cause them to rot which we want to avoid a good mix is one part compost one part perlite or sand and one part potting soil this combination provides food helps with drainage and gives the roots a good structure to grow into preparing your soil properly is like making a comfortable bed for your new plant once your soil is ready it is time to choose a pot or a spot in the garden if you are using a pot make sure it is large enough a pot that is at least 40 to 50 cm wide and deep is a good start it must have drainage holes at the bottom if you are planting in the garden find a spot that gets plenty of sunlight banana plants love the sun they need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day also choose a location that is sheltered from strong winds as their large leaves can easily get torn the moment has come to plant your banana carefully remove the plant from its original container be gentle with the roots place it in the center of your new pot or the hole you dug in the garden the hole should be twice as wide as the root ball fill the space around the plant with your prepared soil mix pat the soil down gently but do not press too hard you want the soil to be firm but not compacted this allows the roots to breathe and grow outwards easily after planting the first watering is very important give your new banana plant a thorough drink of water water it until you see water coming out of the drainage holes of the pot for a plant in the garden water the area deeply this helps the soil settle around the roots and removes any air pockets it gives the plant a great start in its new home this initial watering is a welcoming gesture helping the plant to feel secure and begin its new life watering is a key part of caring for your banana plant these plants come from tropical places so they love moisture you should keep the soil consistently moist but not soaking wet a good way to check is to stick your finger about an inch into the soil if it feels dry it is time to water during the warm summer months you might need to water it every day or two in the cooler winter you can water less often always pay attention to your plant and the soil they will tell you what they need banana plants grow very fast so they need a lot of food you should feed your plant regularly during the growing season which is from spring to autumn a balanced all-purpose fertilizer is a good choice you can use a liquid feed every 2 weeks or a slowrelease granular fertilizer every month follow the instructions on the fertilizer package carefully providing these nutrients is essential for strong growth and eventually for producing fruit think of it as giving your plant the energy it needs to perform your banana plant will grow new leaves from the center as it does the older outer leaves may turn yellow or brown and die this is completely normal you should prune these dead leaves away use a clean sharp knife or pruning shears to cut them off close to the main stem this not only makes the plant look tidier but also helps prevent any potential diseases it allows the plant to put all its energy into growing new healthy leaves and in time its fruit as your plant gets bigger you might see small new plants called suckers growing from the base it is best to remove most of these allow only one or two of the strongest suckers to continue growing this ensures that the main plant gets all the energy and nutrients it needs to produce a large bunch of bananas you can carefully dig up the other suckers and plant them in new pots to grow more banana plants it is a wonderful way to share your gardening success with friends and family growing bananas requires patience it can take 9 months or even longer for a flower to appear the flower is a large purplish teardrop-shaped bud that hangs down from the top of the plant from this flower small bananas known as fingers will begin to form it is a truly magical process to watch be patient and continue your routine of care your plant is working hard even when you cannot see the changes happening every day good things in the garden often take time once the bananas appear they will grow and mature over the next few months a group of bananas is called a hand and a whole stalk of them is called a bunch the bananas are ready to be harvested when they look plump and rounded and the small flower at the tip of each banana is dry and falls off easily they will still be green but you should harvest them at this stage you can cut the entire bunch from the plant with a strong sharp knife after you harvest the bananas they will ripen off the plant you can hang the bunch in a cool shady place they will slowly turn from green to yellow once they are yellow they are ready to eat homegrown bananas have a flavor that is so much richer and sweeter than what you can buy in a shop the satisfaction of eating something you have grown yourself is one of the greatest joys of gardening it is a delicious reward for all your patience and hard work so there you have it growing
