A beautiful and thriving garden is something that many gardeners work hard for and cherish but the hard work can often be spoiled by small invaders who nibble on and destroy plants and flowers, and while the summer time is an exciting season for gardeners as they embrace the harvest and full blooms that fill their gardens. The concern of pests making their way through their plants looms.
Now, gardeners are being urged to leave a small bowl of beer in their gardens, which might seem bizzare, but the gardening trick does wonders in protecting plants from two specific pests.
The gardening defence advice was shared by Sow Right Seeds, a family-owned seed company. It reminded gardeners that whilst a moist and warm growing environment can be beneficial for plants. It also creates the ideal home for slugs and snails.
The presence of slugs and snails can quickly destroy a garden. The pests feed on seelings, tender foliage, and ripening fruits, leaving irregular holes and slimy trails through the garden.
As a tip to stop the animals from destroying gardens, Sow Right Seeds have advised home owners to leave bowls of beer as beer traps in gardens.
The website reads: “Beer traps is one of the most popular and effective natural slug and snail deterrents. Slugs and snails are attracted to the scent of beer, and once they crawl into the trap, they’ll drown.”
The company recommends that the bowl or shallow container used is filled with beer by at least an inch. The bowl should then be buried into the soil so that the rim is level with the ground.
Gardeners should make sure to check the beer trap daily to remove any drown slugs and snails, as well as ensure that they refill it as the scent of the beer can diminish over time.
For those who may not have any beer in their homes, but want to make use of the trick quickly, then the company says a mixture of sugar, water, and yeast will also do the trick.
And just like that, the cheap and quick method will keep your gardens slug and snail free.
