My kids have created a pond / sandbox near the base of this large tree. This is at our cabin we are up here every other weekend or every third weekend and one of the days without fail my kids get the hose fill up all these holes with water and play and trench and the water sits around usually for the full two days we're here and drains very slowly.

Should I be finding them a different place to dig? I would hate for this tree to die.

It’ll be fine just don’t give them pick axes and chainsaws

I’d be extremely concerned about a construction site that close to my trees. Heavy equipment use often results in inadvertent diesel spills and high traffic areas like that can result in soil compaction and damage to roots… seriously though, I wouldn’t be too worried about it, unless they start doing some real digging.

Tree will be fine. You’re not even there all the time.

All the crap piled up on the critical root will be damaging the tree more then the kids.

I’m sure the tree is fine, the astronomical heavy equipment carnage will be difficult to recover from, however.

Worse things can and will happen to this tree but walking around on its roots and especially digging soil away from the foot is not how to take care of it. It’s a chance to plant a good idea with the kids. Happy Father’s Day!
