hello there and welcome to Lake Update lakeme the largest reservoir in the United States has reached a critically low level of 1,56.20 ft as of June 9th 2025 this marks a staggering 172.8 ft below full pool capacity 1,229 ft leaving the reservoir at just 42% of its maximum storage the water level has dropped 0.09 ft in just one day reflecting a steady and concerning decline if this trend continues Hoover Dam’s hydro power generation which supplies electricity to millions could be threatened if levels fall below 950 ft while the reservoir is still far above the winter pool level of 915 ft the long-term outlook remains grim without significant changes the ongoing drought in the southwest is a major factor in Lake Me’s decline the region is currently experiencing exceptional drought D4 the most severe category with little relief in sight Lake Me’s water level at 156.20 ft MSL represents just 42% of its full capacity continuing a 25-year downward trend that has accelerated since 2020 the reservoir has lost approximately 12 million acre feet of water since 2000 enough to supply the entire state of California for 3 years the 0.09 ft daily decline observed in early June 2025 is particularly concerning as it comes during what should be the seasonal inflow period from spring snow melt historical data shows the lake typically rises 10 to 15 feet during spring months but this year’s increase has been less than 3 feet since March the current elevation puts Hoover Dam’s intake towers at 67% of their operational height at 950 ft the dam would reach dead pool status where water can no longer flow downstream snowpack levels in the upper basin were just 72% of normal in 2025 continuing a pattern of declining winter precipitation rising temperatures have increased evaporation rates by 15% since 2000 with Lake Meade losing approximately 600,000 acre feet annually to evaporation equivalent to the annual water use of 2 million households if you found this breakdown helpful hit subscribe we’ll keep tracking Lake Me’s water levels and explain what the numbers really mean for our future every drop counts including your attention to this crisis

So who (or what) is diverting upstream inflow? (Texas has a similar issue in lake Travis, and it is also due to upstream use of water not allowing it to reach the lake . . . even when all other area lakes are flooding . . . )

I have a friend who works for a utility in Vegas and he indicated that the City of Las Vegas has no intention of slowing down growth. What do they think will happen to property values if they run out of water? They just don't care.
