Maitland City Council has unveiled a new Community Gardens Framework.

It’s designed to make it easier for residents and community groups to establish and manage gardens on oouncil-managed land.

The initiative provides a step-by-step guide covering everything from planning and design through to long-term management.

It also includes a list of pre-approved sites to fast-track applications, plus additional support via consultation sessions and helpful resources to give new gardens the best chance of thriving.

Maitland City mayor Philip Penfold said the new framework responded directly to the community’s growing interest in creating local garden spaces.

“Community gardens offer more than just a space to grow food – they bring people together, provide opportunities for learning new skills and create beautiful, shared spaces,” he explained.

“This framework will provide the tools and support our community needs to turn their gardening ideas into reality while promoting sustainability and local food security.”

The initiative includes practical resources such as a risk assessment template, garden design tips, and clearly outlined application guidelines, too.

While council has identified several suitable sites to simplify the process, community members can also propose other locations, subject to a suitability assessment.

Applications are now open for individuals and groups interested in starting a garden.
