TV star Adam Frost revealed that his world was turned upside down when he developed a health condition and lost his enthusiasm for gardening.

After testing positive for Covid in 2021, Gardeners’ World presenter Adam was forced to stop working and self-isolate, causing him to feel like his life was “crashing in”. During this period of isolation, he began to notice the multitude of tasks that needed attention in his garden, leading to a second diagnosis from his doctor.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Adam confessed: “When I fell ill with Covid in 2021 and was forced to stop and isolate, everything came crashing in. It was as if somebody had removed my footings.

“Emotionally, I was gone. Even my passion for gardening disappeared. When I looked out of the window at the vast garden I had created, all I could see were jobs.”

Ten days later, a psychiatrist diagnosed Adam with burnout and depression, and he began his recovery journey through therapy and medication. However, he soon realised that to regain his mental wellbeing, he needed to significantly downsize his garden.

This revelation prompted Adam and his wife Sulina to sell their 18th-century farmhouse and relocate to a more modest home in Lincolnshire, comprising two former estate workers’ cottages converted into a single property.

Adam recently opened up about his concerns regarding how fans would perceive his new, smaller garden compared to his previous three-acre plot.

Despite initial reservations, Adam has come to believe that a more modest garden size allows viewers to “relate” to him better than before.

The TV personality is so at ease with his garden that he doesn’t even “worry” if viewers spot weeds among the plants he tends with his children Abi-Jade, Jacob, Amber-Lily, and Oakley. He acknowledges, though, that his partner Sulina does “worries more than I do” about such details.

In a candid discussion on Morning Live, Adam shared insights into his mental health struggles and how addressing these issues publicly has resonated with male viewers.

He expressed how men have thanked him for his openness, saying: “When you discuss these matters, and you’re a bloke of a certain age, the number of men who have reached out to me afterward saying, ‘Frosty, thanks for just doing that or saying that,’ I’m getting a bit goosebumpy now.”

Adam emphasised the importance of using his public platform to talk about mental health, recognising its positive impact on others. He added: “I think the fact that we’re on screen, we’ve got that platform, we talk about these issues, and it does help people.”

Fans can look forward to seeing Adam back on their screens tonight (Friday, May 23) as he co-hosts coverage of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show alongside Sophie Raworth, starting from 7.30pm on BBC One.
