Daughter was helping me mow when we scared this poor little friend out from under a spicebush. It tried to hide between queen of the prairie and a goldenrod along the fence (second photo) and finally made its home behind the pokeweed and other vegetation in the compost pile (first photo).

So pleased that mom found our heavily gardened yard a safe place for baby.

I was awed when this happened to me four years ago, too.

Unfortunately mama ate my entire vegetable garden down to stumps the next day, and now returns annually to aggressively prune all my fruit trees, and half of my flowers. Especially my elderberries, and aronia, which are now 3 years old and still smaller than me because she absolutely decimates them every June.
