Journey to the Château, Ep. 314 – In this episode, Patrick and Stuart work in the chateau courtyard and gardens. Patrick gives a tour and update on the kitchen gardens (potager) and Stuart harvests their abundance of red currants as the first harvest of the season. They discover that the chateau courtyard fountain has been infested with pollen beetles from the nearby oilseed rape (canola) crops. Patrick and Stuart also show their trip to a brocante in the French town of Neuvy-Pailloux and share their purchases.

so here you can see how amazing these plants grow
we have not put any fertilizer in the ground here or anything this rose we planted two little over
two years ago and it has a really fascinating scent it’s almost like a little bit of nutmeg
in it and it fills this entire corner of the courtyard so sometimes and we can smell it in
the kitchen we have our espalier apples which are doing great or lemon trees we have dahlias
that are they’re growing like crazy it’s fantastic and the first bunch of those dahlias it’s four
different dahlia that grow like one ginormous plant how great is that and then that rose
we have a rose that starts in in an orange tone and then fades to a what is that in light
apricot color or something it’s really amazing it’s beautiful that good with color so and
again that we planted that that hasn’t been here very long yes that’s that’s actually
only a year a little over a year here right so plants really love it here and I can’t
believe the the rose I just stood in front of i mean it has these risers just insanely
tall it’s fantastic it couldn’t be any any prettier really and it looks really like one
of those old roses the leaves are incredibly healthy and if I could I would tell you
which rose it is but I’m not that good so we have peas coming up
raspberry raspberry golden oh this is the beautiful currant bush
this is our current currant yes yes oh they’re sweet now perfect we need to harvest
raspberries and our mini strawberries yep and I’m going to make like it’s going to be one or two
jars maybe if we’re lucky but having raspberry strawberry jam it’s going to be so nice to cook
a small amount this is these are black currants which I think we have one left oh no oh there’s
a couple there oh they have such an intense scent and this is this will not get color this will
be very pale very stay they call it white but they’re lovely now peaches are kind of a
mixed bag this year aren’t they we need to really prune them again strimmer them
and prune them is so the under growth what doesn’t get sunlight dies off so we need
to work on that a bit but there plenty on there for me to process and deal with so
I’m not we don’t always need a huge harvest this already is I don’t know 20 30 jars of jam
oh it’s fantastic and incredibly tasty so that’s going to be the blood red peach bellini jam
available only when you come to the chateau welcome to the potager of Colombe it’s I know
it’s not huge in the old days all of this and the entire field which is about 9 acres with
all vegetable gardens so we don’t need 9 acres of vegetable gardens because we don’t have to
feed 30 people for a year but so here these are two cucumbers i have put out seeds for
more in the greenhouse which are coming up so these are already getting mature and they have
small cucumbers on them so then the next ones are going to be planted in about 2 weeks plants get
exhausted and they stop producing so then we have cucumbers till the fall it’s really great we have
three pumpkins here edible pumpkins they are uh oh good lord i always butcher this word so forgive me
potiron or potiron they’re smaller dark orange and you can just chop them up take the seeds out chop
them up cook them with the skin which is hard but it softens up so it’s very very easy to cook with
them and then we have tomatoes tomatoes tomatoes and quite I mean I don’t even know how many plants
we have this is three six 8 9 13 20 24 right and we have it’s a variety of cherry tomatoes yes
cherry tomatoes cooking tomatoes Roma because when you cook with Roma tomatoes it’s they don’t
have a lot of the jiggly stuff on the interior so therefore it’s you don’t need to cook it so
long for the water to evaporate to have a really like nice creamy and thicker sauce so that’s great
we have a whole bunch of those they just planted and you have to I well find it beneficial to
stagger when you plant because otherwise we would sit with like 40 kilos of tomatoes at the
same time and so now it’s it’s you know a bit stretched out so we can when we cook it’s going to
be already the end of July early August when it’s really really hot the tomatoes are going to be in
really fantastic taste so that is really really wonderful and we have what else we got oh beans
beans beans beans don’t let me forget the beans so here we are our beans these are 20 beans that
Jane pre-grew she has some of them too so lots of lots and lots of beans which is fantastic I
have purple French beans or string beans in the greenhouse which we’ll plant in between so they
have then we will have a hopefully a really really good harvest of beans they’re fantastic because
you can just blanche them in hot water and then freeze them and lovely i mean just really really
nice and they’re not eaten by rabbits or deer how fantastic is that and neither are tomatoes by
the way too so lots of lots and lots of beans which is fantastic and then in this corner here
we have two artichoke plants and we have dahlias because we will have a cut flower garden we will
expand this further but so we have a cut flower garden for the chateau so that we don’t have to
buy a lot of flowers we can just harvest them or cut them in in the garden and then fill the
rooms of the chateau it’s really exciting and we have in the greenhouse uh zinneas and
little dahlia plants which will not bloom until next year but the dahlia but that’s also
exciting they will all be transplanted to here so when we turned on the fountain this morning
everything was just lovely where is Stuart there he is it was great and so we’re back and it’s an
absolute disgusting disaster i’m going to show you as you can see this is very frustrating
so these are pollen beetles or which thrive on kulsa or canola oil plants i mean
can the plants the rape plants canola plants actually damaged them and so we had
the canola fields right across from us this year and 3 years ago right we saw we as
you saw those in our previous vlogs they’re the bright yellow fields yes blue they’re beautiful
but And so since there is no more there are no more flowers there they they migrate away from
the fields and we have hundreds of thousands of them drowning themselves in our fountain um so
the water then starts they start to decompose and so we have rotting bug water in our fountain
so we have to clean it out again wait it out for about a week or so cuz they don’t have that long
a life cycle and then we can actually refill the fountain again it’s very very frustrating but
um oh well we have to we do what we have to do hello not from Colombe but from Neuvy-Pilloux
i think I pronounced that slightly correct and slightly incorrect anyways it’s a beautiful day
and we’re at a brocante that we have been once before and we had guests checking out this morning
guests checking in this afternoon so busy busy busy and it’s a really good thing to be anyways
let’s see what we can find if we find anything okay that was fun it was a lot of baby clothes
children’s clothes it was very questionable at the beginning wasn’t it but so got this for
bottles yep lovely we have one now we have two and we got something that’s really interesting
it’s actually a upside down this is a printing plate for wallpaper it’s probably 18th century
yeah and I and I said to Patrick and it’s like well it looks like well we’re going to check out
the markings on the back it has some writing on it and it looks like it was a multicolored print and
this is probably one of one color plate from that wallpaper so but it’s really nice print absolutely
yes fantastic and of course you know it’s continuous the bug does not belong but yeah it’s
really really quite cool and so we can actually um hang that up because it’s very decorative and we can use it just use it wash it off and
that’s what they’ve done for centuries so that’s really really cool yeah that
was a fun find yeah totally unexpected if you enjoyed this video please use the like

  1. You're going to have so much fruit coming in at the same time, better get ready ya'll are going to be canning for weeks. 😅 Kathy USA 🇺🇸

  2. Love your garden! I was thinking that perhaps you could add flower bulbs and grafted plants to your Chateaux meet ups. You could swap rose cuttings and dahlia and other bulbs. Great way of spreading the flower love!
Same could go with favourite veg seeds.
Liked your buys at the market.
Have you completed the second gite? Looks like you getting plentiful bookings which is wonderful. I bet the visitors love your gardens as well. ❤️❤️🐕

  3. Aloha, your flowers and fruits and vegetables are fantastic. Gosh darn those pesky beetles; the nerve! Wonderful finds especially the print block. J’adore Chateau de Colombe.

  4. I agree with last comment. Why you don’t have more subscribers is beyond me. I Jove your vegetable garden, small but perfect. I grow my cucumbers in the greenhouse but loose some every year, perhaps it gets too hot. I love love your roses and all others plants and shrubs you have around. What is your plan to beautify around the fountain. You two are so talented and have such excellent taste. Your chateau both in and out is such a feast for the eyes. Thank you. Michele.

  5. Absolutely don’t understand why your channel isn’t growing as fast as it should, been watching from the very beginning and I love it.

  6. The roses ❤ the garden is coming along splendid!! Eeeewwwwww the bugs!! How very dare they take a swim in your beautiful fountain!!! The carved wood is truly beautiful ❤❤❤ love to you both ❤

  7. The gardens are just beautiful and the capture of the humming bird was such a great capture Stuart! Love a great find at a brocant/market with the printing block…so cool. Would be cool to experiment and create some printed pieces in different colors, maybe even just to frame and put in rooms as an accent piece to fit with the decor of different rooms….endless possibilities my Darlings 😊 Sending you and the fur babies lots of love! ❤❤

  8. Get some Koi for the fountain!! They will nom, nom, nom your worries away! ⛲🐠🐞👍❤️🇨🇦 PS, your garden is magnifico👌

  9. You have probably already discussed what you plan to do with the area surounding the fountain, when and what do you intend with that lovely area?

  10. the abundance of nature. Your could keep a calender of the tiny invaders, to see how is each year. Could be an interesting data por your neighbors.

  11. Well, I am astonished…my massive climbing rose I bought 10 years ago and I can’t remember from where,is Jasmina!!I thought it was’ Angels something’,but could never find a photo of that..obviously doesn’t exist,cos it’s JASMINA ! !
Thank you for that, you guys ,you’ve made a rosearian 😂very happy!
(it was lovely to see Master Figgy last week..he is SO photogenic, isn’t he..)
you can get Jasmina from Peter Beales Roses in uk…highly recommended if you’ve a strong support or better still an arch..bomb proof suffers from nothing and thrives on neglect.

  12. Oh the potager is looking fabulous! I love the mixing of the vegetables and cut flowers – you will keep the bees happy and busy, which will hopefully help your veggie yields too! Love the variety you have, I hope it's a bountiful year for you!

  13. Wow is it that time of year again to start to make jam's etc how time flies, your flower's and vegetables garden looks wonderful lots to harvest, take care and see you both next time 💕🌼🤗

  14. Hi sweeties. Your vegetable garden is coming along. With warm temperatures, it will grow fast.
The blooming roses look so beautiful. To use the flowers from the garden instead of buying them will make such a difference. Also, using your own vegetables will be much easier. Hugs and kisses also for the furries and Figaro 🥰🥰😘🐕🐈

  15. The wall paper wood pattern is a real find. The grounds, the trees, and how you get such beautiful beautiful flowers is amazing 👏 🤩 Love it!!❤

  16. Wasn't going to comment on the bugs as i am NOT a fan., but We get Asian beetles when they plant beans and they get into everything. I know how ickky that is. Hopefully they didn't infest the chateau.😬

  17. Bon Jour! Guten Tag! Patrick and Stuart! The climbing rose ‘Jasmina’ is wonderful! My roses do not look that spectacular ever in my climate. However, my roses do fairly well. Speaking of a beetle infestation and roses, I had a horrible Japanese beetle infestation on my roses last summer but not as bad as your fountain! Yikes! I always love seeing your brocante finds.

  18. Oh my, the large cluster of mauve/pink roses is something to behold! Your garden is wonderful! So sorry you have to deal with rotting bugs in your lovely fountain…like you need more jobs! Nothing like a good brocante to heal your wounds.

  19. Hello, I love to watch your videos and love the garden in particular. That pink Jasmina rose is spectacular, just wondering , do you have bee or bumble bee hives. Have you heard of 3 sisters planting. The American Indians used to grow that way. Corn with beans growing up the corn and squash at the base to keep the moisture in the soil. I tried it and it works. From nz.

  20. Wow, I'm amazed at how advanced your dahlias are! I have a similar situation here in 17, my garden is going wild! I've just harvested my first apricots, from a 2.5 year old tree which is 3 metres tall! My veges are the best ever too, I'm hoping this will be a bumper year for all of us! Keep up the good work guys.
