‘A Peaceful Place’ weekly winner of Garden Photo Contest
Coexisting with nature is a process, as we see in “A Peaceful Place,” this week’s photo pick. Gardener Patricia Hambleton of Washington tells us, “We are incorporating more native plants while still respecting the long-ago planted nonnatives. The tree far right in the bed is a paw paw. We have several and yes, they do bear fruit. We battle deer, blue herons (fish in the pond, rabbits and the occasional groundhog) but try very hard to coexist. It is impossible not to love the fawns that mamas leave every year on the edge of our woods, ” she says. Hambleton will receive a home or garden book and will compete for the grand prize — a $200 gift certificate to English Gardens — through online voting by Homestyle readers in early September. The grand-prize winner will be announced in Sept. 12. For entry instructions and rules, go to detroitnews.com/gardenphotos25. Don’t forget to tell us a bit about what makes them special to you, what flowers you used, or what inspires you. We want to hear your gardening story!

‘Rehab Addict’ is back June 24
Fans of homegrown renovator and HGTV star Nicole Curtis won’t want to miss the new season of Rehab Addict, which premieres June 24. Curtis travels the country to restore neglected historic homes needing a major rescue in the latest season, which includes four new episodes and one of her biggest challenges yet — fighting to save two derelict properties that are 1,500 miles apart. In Wyoming, Nicole will take on a 1890s house subjected to a bad flip, and, back in Detroit, she’ll purchase one of the dirtiest abandoned homes she’s ever seen. The premiere episode opens in Wyoming, where Nicole visits the house she bought sight unseen and moves on to a 1928 Detroit property, where she scopes out the many original details, including subway bathroom tile, a built-in telephone stand and a laundry chute to the basement, before she and her team replace the dilapidated roof — the first step in restoring the home to its original glory.
