I explained that butterfly bush was invasive in our region (central Virginia), asked him to please look into alternatives, and he found false indigo on a local nursery's website!
(I've also made a deal with him that I'll plant the shrubs border he's mentioned doing along our property line for him if he picks native species, so hopefully that incentive will work out)

These seem like such a good gateway drug into native plant gardening! I was just noticing a gorgeous huge one in a fancy person’s highly manicured yard today and had that thought. Your dad’s looks great!
